Default Wild Coho For Sale!

Right on - ain't it great! My friend told me I could go to Safeway and for just $1.98 a pound I could buy fish advertised as "wild coho". &*%^#@!
I don't know much about the whole fisheries debate thing but when something is protected isn't it like a federal crime to even sneeze at it? Then again, I guess if they really wanted to protect wild fish they would close sportfishing all together in case there is some catch and release mortality. I don't know, just sort of ticks me off (to put it mildly) that those guys are out there harvesting the fish I paid to rear in those hatchery ponds as well as incidentally catching the ones I have to release (not that I mind releasing them) and then rubbing our faces in it by advertising them as wild. And what do we get? Diminished sports opportunities during what could have been the best coho season we'll ever see on Oregon streams in our lifetime.

Don't get all fired up about Safeway. They don't always tell the whole truth.... ever eat some of the stuff they call hamburger? The nets are out, the price is down, how many "wild salmon" does it take in the mix to advertise as such. Gee... they all look like wild filets to me sir....No, they are all really firm and fresh... Yes they are frozen but you can just tell........

Fred Meyer had the sale for 1.98 a pound yesterday (advertised as Columbia coho). I know Fred's goes local as much as possible. I tend to think they were Columbia coho and I'm sure some of them were wild. Nets don't discriminate.

Wild to the add writer does not mean the same as wild to those of us who fish. To them wild just means they were not farmed raised. I think they say wild because they so not want to say non farmed raised because a lot of people like non farmed raised fish better. The stored need to be able to sale farmed salmon when nonfarmed is unavailable. That means they could be hatchery or true "wild" fish. T There will be a mixture of wild and hathcery fish in the sale. I sold a bunch when a certain grocery store had it on sale. Some of the fillets had a missing adipose fin and some did not. The last couple of weeks when I filleted some non farmed raised chinooks in the last month and have noticed something really weird. There is a knife cut just back of the tale on the bottom towards the rearend. I hope someone knows about this practice.

Robert, from what I understand, that cut is to bleed the fish out. I guess there is a major vein/artery back there.

Salmon, coho and chinook are being sold in Ilwaco for $1 /lb. I wonder what the netter gets at the dock?

Most of the fish I've seen advertised as 'farm raised' recently are Atlantic or chinook. Where are all of the fish (coho) that they are netting in the Columbia being sold off to??? FM, Safeway, Albertsons, QFC, Mom and Pop's...

The current price that the folks in Washington are getting from the wholesalers is between 25 and 35 cents a pound. Some folks in Ilwaco have been selling them for $1 a pound, cleaned.

As stated above, the term "wild" means non-farmed fish. Usually most are hatchery, some are actual wild fish. The knife cuts on the tail are a grading tool. As you may know the tail end of the fish is where the meat begins to turn pale first. This is where the buyer looks to grade the fish according to meat color.
