Default About Flotilla III....

What is up with that on this Board Fisher persons? Is it still on? Washington boys on Bob's board are yakking it up. Pretty quite here. Kind of like a Mariners game lately.

Just checking in to see if I need to make other plans.

I also am wondering what is going on. I have several questions since I have never done one of these. Where do we meet? How do we get to the Satsop? Is there a time that we all meet somewhere? Is there a specific take out time and place? Help! Help!

RT, whaddaya know?

Let me light a fire under Jim and we'll see what gives for Saturday morning.

I'm planning to be there and maybe bring the motorhome to stay at Friends Landing then meet up under the Hiway 12 bridge at the Satsop. That was the last meeting place I saw mentioned.

The Piscatorial BB has an ongoing discussion/river watch for the Satsop levels. The thread is "Flotilla III - what is the plan?" Doug posted in it today the 'Sop up to 780 cfs and still rising as I type. Lots of rain up there and mid-week showers are forecast. So it is looking good for a big silverfest, and some 'nooks too, for F III this Saturday the 27th. Dan and Jim correct me if this is wrong - but the latest plans are for everyone to meet between 5:30 to 6:00 am at the large boat ramp lot by the Hwy 12 bridge over the lower Satsop. You cross the bridge and in a short ways cross over to the east bound lane to re-cross the bridge and turn in right there. The water and fish prospects are now looking very good. Of course it depends on what happens with the weather the rest of the week. You can driftboat from a couple launches up the river down to the Hwy 12 take out. Dan S said he will have copies of map directions to launches and what to look watch for drifting - I recall it's not a difficult section to run? You can also put in a jet sled right there at the meeting launch to run up the Sop a ways to fish the lower holes and also be able to run out to fish the mainstem Chehallis River. Watch this post here and the one on Bob's board for the latest conditions/plans. Plans are for meeting for brew and pizza after us Oregonians score a big road victory in the "Slaughter by the Water".

RT

Edit: Bernie, we are set to team with Stew and Spooled in my sled. Maybe you could edit in a change of your thread name here from 'Pretty quiet about Flotilla III' to just 'About Flotilla III'; to get proper notice that it's looking good! Thanks.

You cannot run a sled from the Hiway 12 launch to the Chehalis mainstem. Too much brush and debris unless this rain blows it out. My advice...don't count on it.

Take I-5 north from Portland.

Exit to Hwy 101 North at Tumwater (Brewery on Right)

Follow Hwy. 101 past Mud Bay.

Stay left onto Hwy 12/Hwy 8 where 101 to Shelton/Pt. Angeles peels off to the right.

Follow Hwy.12/8 through McCleary and Elma. You will cross the Satsop about 4 miles past Elma. Go past the river and up to the Brady Exit. Hang a U-turn here and head back toward the river. The takeout is on the right just past the bridge.

I'll have some maps of the Satsop and middle Chehalis at the morning hookup. You can take your pick where you wanna fish.

We're looking at getting together about 5:45-6:00, BS a while and then head out. We can hook up later in the afternoon back at the ramp, and bail out to get some 'za and beer. Pick your designated drivers.

Thanks

Hey Pete, it sounds like a camping trip to me. Maybe we better put the campers on and head down to Mildreds on Friday and leave for the Satsop from there. Stay the night either at Mildreds or drive up 101 and stay there. Either you or me will be able to pull the boat. Did you talk to that guy about the motor?

IT RAINED!!!

Have been quiet cuz I wasn't sure if the Satsop was gonna dry up and go away or what!

Great advice here, not sure if I can add anything 'cept I would have let RT try to run down from the ramp However one thing that wasn't mentioned is that there is great bank access downstream from the ramp...and the Satsop has pretty adequate bank access all the way to the park. As for my boat we will launch at the Monte ramp at close to 7...we will have to work logistics out cuz the ramp will be a zoo...If this was enough rain...you db boys should have a blast on the Satsop, we have just been stackin em for the last couple of weeks just below the mouth on the Chehalis.

****Papas Pizza in Elma is the only place big enough, I stoppped in there on Saturday, biggest thing for them is they would like a head count. So I told them I would try...how many plan on Pizza and Beverage after fishing??

Jim

email me if you have questions especially about sledding the Chehalis.

Dan, I take a good short cut up to Hwy 12/8 when coming north on I-5, by taking the Hwy. 12 West exit about 5 miles north of Centralia. It's a nice paved 2 lane highway with long straight aways that goes thru Oakville and meets Hwy 8/101 about 2 miles east of Elma. You approach and go under the Hwy. 8 bridge and take the first left onto the on-ramp toward Elma/Montesano/Aberdeen to the west, on the now combined Hwy.'s 12/8. It is all very clear on any good Washington map. Going this route after traveling the 70 mph Washington I-5 freeway speed limit north of Vanc., it will take about 2 hours and 10 minutes from the I-5 bridge over the Columbia to the Satsop bridge ramp lot. Going Dan's way up to Tumwater and then west on hwy. 8/101, I would estmate to take about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Either way gets you there just fine. >>>

Jim, as far as how many for beer and pizza at Elma ... how many e-mailed you they are coming to F III? I would imagine most going for the suds and pie, and the bs'ing fun afterward. Pictures in both the ramp lot and pizza place should be in order - with all the Oregon caught/Washington cleaned fish being held up in a big group photo.

EDIT: I just read some posts on Bob's BB where the guys up there say the Satsop is totally blown out overnight, and could stay that way if predicted further rains this week are too much. If they are light and the freezing level drops, the river may be in. Really ironic if it's not after all this wait thru dry weather for F III !!! Keep an eye on the posts this week.

RT,

I just gave the I-5 route because it keeps the turns to a minimum.

Limits on the Satsop: 2 adults, only one king or unclipped silver. Release chums.

Satsop is currently puking, but if the weather stays cold and the showers aren't too heavy, it could be just what we were looking for.

There's a store just down the highway from the Satsop where you can get a license and any gear you might need.

Gee TM, you seem so glib about it. Is that because you can't attend, as you mentioned to me. Be happy for us if it comes back in. You'll be back out there before ya know it. And Joe (Fly) said the east fork Sop, where most of the driftboaters will go, clears very fast and is a great prospect by this weekend to be crammed with big silvers. Chehallis guide Jim Bain called me a little while ago and is optimistic the Chehallis will fish for the sledders. >>>

Jeff, our team in my sled will follow you and Jim to one of his places on the Chehallis, after all F IIIers meet at the Hwy 12 ramp lot by the Satsop bridge around 5:45 am or so. Latest forecast is for just clouds late in the week. I hope they are right.

Minors? Only Spooled - he's 20. And of course the coal minors coming from eastern Washington. (or is that silver minors from Kellog, Ida ho? - notice both silver and ho in that sentence )

If the Mrs. is part of Team WA, then let 'er rip. I don't mind being outfished by a lady as long as she's part of the team!

From my highly scientific analysis of the weather forecast and river flow, we should be fine.

I have 20 maps of the Chehalis and 20 maps of the Satsop. If you need one, be there early because I won't be standing around handing them out forever. Of course. Team OR maps will be of the lower Quinault and Hoh rivers, but don't worry about that.

Think showers, not rain.

DanS, Niki is very definitely part of Team WASHINGTON and wants to kick RT's butt(fish-wise that is), but it seems he's already got a problem there.

I'm hearing he wants to 'shadow' the best team on the water so's he can see a real fish up-close and personal.

We're looking forward to meeting up with all of you. I'll have the digital camera with me so we can show off all those Team WASHINGTON fish!!!!!!

I'll try for an answer here, if it don't work, I'll try P.P. What are the boat ramps like? My wife will go with me on this trip as long as I don't make her endure 200 miles in my crummy old truck.

So I need to take the van but I won't go if the ramps are old 4 wheel drive-lock the brakes half way down-stop sliding at the edge of the ledge-where the **** did the trailer go? types of ramps.

Hey, that might be a good future topic. Which ramp made you wish you had eaten coal for dinner cuz you would be shi**ing diamonds this morning? Some other time I guess. Those types of ramps are closely related to zipper holes anyway.

Back to the topic..Specifically- will my full sized 2 wheel drive van be able to pull my drift boat out of the river at the end of the day? Thanks in advance.

No prob Snapset!! More then likely you guys will be taking out at 101..Most of the launchs on the satsop are easy except for a couple..Best bet is to launch at the gravel bar..which I'm sure a few of you will!!

Hootchie mamma and Dan the man - you got it all backwards! Jim wants me along side to show some Oregon silver techs so he can up his fish take average. I will only show him our B-game stuff, and that will help. Got to keep the A-game stuff secret though. ...

Nah, Jim was nice enough to allow that idea. I've never even been on the Chehallis. I won't tell any of his secrets either. ... I couldn't do the driftboat thing up there on the East Fork Satsop, where all those fish will be stacked and waiting by Saturday. Can't be bouncin my broken tail around, so will sit in my sled's cushy office chair, in the easy water - more likely standing up most of the time! Gonna have some fun, one way or the other.

Spooled 20? He was pretty calm when he hooked that fish. Showed the poise of someone 60 or so years or more. I guess its just because he is mean looking as RT put it.

By the way RT, are handoffs allowed on your boat? I might need to accept one since I'll be running top water Coho gear with pink worm sent. At least Ryan him them in Canada on the Harrison with pink worms. Those fish up there will hit anything.

I am looking forward to this weekend. Should be a great time with great folks. Troy, if all else fails be sure to bring that Washington snag gear you were talking about. You know the eggs that you cured

Bugle - bring it all, it'll work. It's just like any other river you'd fish, but I'd watch out with the divers because I would hate to lose $6 on a chum I couldn't keep.

Ok this sounds like it will be a real hoot. O'city, Drifty and I will be at the discribed ramp @ 5:45. Pizza etc sounds good too.

Could one or more of you Host's discribe the ramps and locations. We will be drifting the E. Fork. I like those forcasts so far. IE: stacked up fish.

Could a guy go there and just drift fish or is running plugs and diver and bait the best way to go. I would think like any river a combo is best. It would be nice to bring the right stuff and not the entire workbench

I think that noon will be a good time. Some of us will have to get going around 2AM to make it up there by 5:30. Please let us know if there is going to be an alternate location or not.

Jim Bain just called me and we both agree with what Dan S. posted in the 'Satsop watch' thread - he says it's toast, with more rain on the way. I propose we just keep this thing on a 'go when it's ready' basis for the first Saturday in Nov. that it's fishable. Most guys should be able to go. That would be Nov. 3rd, 10th, or 17th - not the Sat. of Thanksgiving weekend though. The Satsop should come in for one of those Saturdays, and those famous big silvers come into it fresh all thru November; just like chinooks do in the Tillamook rivers. Keep us posted on the 2 boards guys. Thanks.

Well, we'll see I guess. I can't go on saturday anyways now. Gotta retab the truck and then put the sled together to put it up for sale in the boat trader. I'd be game for another week for sure.

Now RT,as ya'll said, doesn't take much. But I will say this much. I fished the satsop/chehalis all last week. I KILLED the silvers (all mid to upper teens) on #**% @%#@ @##$. They just couldn't stay off them. I'd throw a @$#% into the water and they'd jump after it. Hmmmm, may have to keep that secret from you guys. LOL. It's been pretty odd, well at least before the rains that is. The silvers were in thick. No fish in the Nooch (which is really odd), tons of silvers in the Chehalis, and a mixture of fish in the Satsop. Only problem is the sop was low and clear and full of SPOOKY fish. Most fish caught were either snagged or hit spinners/plugs (the smaller the better). Now, we have the rains we needed a couple weeks ago blowing everything out. It's a plunker's river now. May bring my rods with me when I head to the Nooch this weekend to winterize my trailer after I do my tabs and boat.

Well, we need to do this. The way it's going now we'll be hitting winterruns on the Chehalis system. LOL

Now I am bummed. BIG rains forcasted for the Oly Penn beginning Friday evening. With the Satsop high already that doesn't sound good.
