Default ? for Traeger Grill Owners

Bought my Treager Texas grill about 3 yrs ago and love it. I grill, roast, and smoke all yr long and it's always used under a covered deck never getting wet. I roasted a turkey breast on super bowl Sun and noticed a lot of rust around the front of the lid where it contacts the grill front. Actually there is also rust on the front too. Is it worth sanding and repainting w/ heat resistant paint. Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks, Wayne

It's worth sanding it off and re-painting it. I've been using the touch up paint from Traeger since I'm fairly certain it will happen again. Maybe somebody else has tried the heat resistant paint that can chime in.

They have been powdercoating them for about a year now. I was just at the factory and they are doing something different even yet. They have a new texture on the grills now. They are just starting to come off the line now. They are also working on some new stuff. I heard that you will soon be able to choose colors? Don't know if and when it will happen but that's the rumor.

We've had ours since October. It sits outside, mostly not under cover (we have an awning, but often have to retract it when it's windy). we do have the traeger cover for the grill itself and it's always on when the weather is wet (unless in use, of course). So far so good.

I wonder if regular cleaning would dissuade the rust? Or is the rust due to the paint coming off? We're careful to clean the firepot regularly and make sure it doesn't over-fill in order to reduce the risk of a fire inside the drum that might damage the paint.

Any other wisdom?

I should have pointed out that mine has only started to rust where the paint chipped. I've sanded off the rust and brushed over the spot with the touch up paint. I didn't have any problems at all until it started to chip. When we first got it I rubbed the whole outside down with carwax as recommended by the guys at W.G.S. where we got ours. Our paint is only chipping around the edges so far.
