Default What's a "shrimp and egg sandwich?"

In response to George's post:

I've heard of a "shrimp & egg sandwich," but never tried it. I think the set up was shrimp on the hook, eggs in the loop, and there might have been a piece of yarn above.

Does it contain tiger shrimp, sand shrimp, or will either work?

Anyone know?

Sandshrimp rigged head down. Just like you drift it for Ike. Thread the hook down throught the last tail segment and then up an inch closer to the head. Then thread the hook through the head shell, point up. 1/2 hitch the tail and pull the slack out. Gob of eggs in the egg loop. Vinny, I usually cinch the yarn into the snell knot on the hook.

I'm probably all wet but that is how I do it. What a weird combo but it works.

Way, way back before bait-wrapped Kwickfish became popular for Chinook we used a combination of eggs and shrimp for backbouncing and running divers with bait. We rigged it in a way that everything would stay on. Pretty simple too.

Take a #2 treble and tie it on with a surgeon's knot (basically a double overhand loop). There should then be a loop about an inch and a half in length with the treble hanging off the end. Then slide a fairly big corky down over the surgeon's knot(metallic green seemed to be best, but any color would probably work). Then put a toothpick thru the corkie hole and break it off clean. Make up a bunch of these and sharpen heck out of the treble. Put the rigs on insulation rolls.

To fish it just open the loop by moving the corkie back to the knot, lay the eggs in the loop, then lay a shrimp on top and gently tighten the corkie over the combination. Works great and the bait doesn't come off. As the eggs milk out keep tightening the loop to keep everything on.

I'll bet it would still work.

Thanks,
I couldn't remember where I'd heard it, the proper name or setup. I wonder if it'll work in the mid-Columbia and/or Snake using tiger shrimp.

I'll have to give it a try.

Vinny, and all else,
Just so happens, this is what we are having for lunch today.
I quick snapped a picture because pictures seem to illustrate things so much better.

A group of Hawaiians shared our Alaska lodge two weeks ago. They had an interesting approach to fresh coho eggs. They took the skeins, washed them thoroughly and separated them with a colander (they custom-made it just egg size to fit over a 5 gallon bucket). They then placed the individual eggs into buckets of water laced with water-softener salt. Three times they strained off the old salt water and three times they put the eggs back into fresh salt water. Sounds time-consuming but actually it was fast. Then they drained off all the water and packaged the eggs into quart jars which they took back to Hawaii. Kind of a salmon egg caviar. It was delicious! We even brought some home. A few years ago we fished with some Germans up there and they did a similar treatment but used sodium nitrate. I didn't taste those.

Salmon eggs don't taste fishy at all when saltwater-treated, and they look like little jewels, slightly smaller than untreated. Live and learn.

No "outdo" intended. You asked for a descriptive picture. LOL. Your favorite spot or mine? This is the front and rain that should bring them into the rivers. Hope some of them hold over for a bit in Tidewater.

Hey, Thumper quit eatin' my bait man.

YOWL. Jennie's adventures at the Sashimi Bar!

The Seaweed wrapped roe might be good bait in the egg loop? Man, the Seaweed to hold the eggs tight, strengthen the overall bait, already cured and good size. Talk about the price of your eggs going up though! Talk about your all BAIT lunch! (Sushi lovers need not reply, GRIN)
