Default Pole Barn/Shop Price

We are looking into moving into a new place. We want some thing with a large shop/pole barn. Nothing up on the market seems to meet our needs so I was looking into building a shop onto a place with enough land to do so. My problem is trying to get a grasp on a price. Has anyone built or have an idea on the final price? We need to know to get an estimate to figure what we can afford. We would like something around 40x30 with concrete floors and 220 volt electric.

Anyone done anything comparable? What size did you do? What did it cost?

Any info would be helpful.

Thanks.

Andy.

I did a 30x48x10, concrete floor, wired, full bath, guy room (20x12) for mounts, shop area and two parking bays. Havn't added up all the paper yet and not finished either. Is going to be 25-30K finished. Local company built it for me, I just did the plumbing and got help with the wiring. Was told to figure what I needed then double it. I was supposed to get a new boat when we moved over here. The garage is my ark, just turned upside down. Good luck!

I built a 30x36x10 summer before last.Did most of the work myself.Have pretty much what you mentioned.I have a little over $20,000 in it.

Did plumbing and wiring myself.

I think your going to be close to $25,000.Maybe$30,000.depending on how fancy you go.And how much of the work you do yourself.

The local pole barn company here charged me $17 / square foot in 2005. That got me some options (overhangs, roll up doors, deluxe trim) built on my site with a concrete floor. It was turn-key. I am sure it has gone up a little, but it is a good starting point. Good luck.

You will never regret having the extra space, even if it means waiting a bit before you build. It actually gets cheaper per sq. ft. the bigger you build it.

I have a 36X48 Pole Barn. Just the Barn was $13,000. When you add concrete, wiring etc it adds up pretty fast. I will say I thought mine was plenty big when I first built and it was empty. I think it has schrunk considerable since. There is never enough room for your toys. Good luck.

I did a 36' X 36' X 12' with concrete floor, 15' lean-to and overhead doors, didn't touch a thing for 16,000.

Bought the kit and contracted the build and pour. Did the power myself with help from a electrician friend, that added 800.00 for materials. Then I added a loft/poker-room with help, made a huge difference in the amount of space on the flooor.

Semi related...

Is there such a thing as moving a garage? The previous owner built my 500 sq ft garage in the middle of my front lawn. Really sucky positioning.. Is there any company that can move it 100 ft or so onto a new slab? Is the cost prohibitive? It would be worth 5-7 to do it but leveling whats there and building new does not seem worth it.

Thats a smokin deal!!!.
I paid $12,500 for my kit.$1200 for 2 9high10wide doors.$1500 for cement.A grand for gravel.Had to do some leveling.About $500 for permits.Close to a grand for electrical supplies.Ran a new meter to the shop.With 220 inside.

Thats just some of the stuff I can think of off the top of my head.I know there were more expense.

You can call around and get kit prices over the phone. The price of lumber is down a bit now so you may save a few bucks there.

It's a very good time to build a shop, the prices on lumber are some of the lowest. We have been joking in our office that the lumber yards will be paying us to take it off their hands soon.

I got some quotes in 2005 for around $25.00 a square foot. I built mine myself as I wanted something a bit different.

I did all the work (except concrete and roofing) myself (my best friend helped as did my wife), and decided against the pole barn method and went with regular stemwalls, 2x6 construction, 200 amp panel and a full second floor. It measures out at 30' x 50'.

I was pretty careful about the monitoring the costs and we came in right around 40k (about 14.00 sf). Keep in mind however, that with a full 2nd floor, this building is almost 3000 square feet.

I have a couple bits of advice for you....if you are interested.

1. bigger is better. Mine is chock full. I couldn't go bigger on mine because of neighborhood covenants which restrict outbuilding size to smaller than the footprint on the house.

2. The taller the door, the better. My doors are 11 feet tall but I wish they were 12. Boats, RVs etc, need a pretty tall door.

This is true.

When i built my shop I talked to my cousin, who has been building them for years.
He does both pole and stick built. At that time he told me that the prices were comparable up to about 24'x32'.After that pole was a little cheaper.

With lower lumber prices. You may be able to build a stick built pretty reasonable. If I was building now.I would definitely look into the stick built a little harder. The only thing I can think of would be the stick built would be more labor intensive.
