Windshield Ice
I keep a good spray bottle of 20/10 deicer to spray on the windshield
when I get up and the ice is melting when I start the car.
If I did not have so much fishing gear in the garage there would be room for the car.

I do the Illinois non-green method where I start it, and go back in to make coffee. I keep hoping somebody will steal it so I can call in to work as a no-show and buy a new truck in the same day, but it don't seem to happen. I may have to post my address on craigs list!

Re: Windshield Ice
I have an old Jeep with a weak defroster.
Been putting a little electric heater out there overnight.
The ol' Jeep is toasty in the AM.
Someday maybe I'll get one of those "remote start" rigs

Re: Windshield Ice
If you get your washer reservoir filled at a quick change oil place, be aware that it's probably just water, no matter what they say. I had the experience of hitting the washers on a cold day, driving on the freeway. The fluid froze as it hit the window, blinding me to the road ahead. It's a potential disaster waiting to happen ... get the real stuff and fill it yourself.

Re: Windshield Ice
I pack a couple of gallon of tepid water to put on the glass in the morning. Been working for 30 years...

Oh man, no scrape, no scrape...it's so pedestrian !
Yep, the water trick works good, too...unless it's really cold.

What a great idea. Use some sort of an inexpensive plastic device maybe beveled on one end. That should work-could but it on a longer stick as the trucks get higher.

Re: Windshield Ice
If you're not hung up on esthetics, here's a trick we did growing up in Minnesota...
Lay a tarp across the whole top of the car. Make sure it covers all the windows. In the morning just pull the whole tarp off and away you go. It isn't the prettiest in a 'fancy' neighborhood but it works.
That was back in the days when you'd stick some cardboard in front of the radiator to help the car heat up faster.

I suddenly realized a couple of weeks back that I had more family cars in the driveway than ice scrapers. Went shopping. (Yeah, that's about as close as I get to "shopping."
I picked up a couple of ice scrapers (see definition above) with 18-inch-long handles and brushes on the opposite end. The nice long handle insures that even my daughter Miss Flossie can reach far enough -- then brush off all the ice shrapnel.
I think they cost me about two bucks each. Don't wait til June to look for them.

When we get serious, quarter-inch-thick freezing rain, when a standard ice scraper doesn't stand a chance, this is a life saver. You may need 2 X 4s, tie-downs, bungees or bricks to hold the tarp in place against the gorge wind, further adding to its attractiveness, but you can be -- presto -- ready to go.
But, of course, in those conditions, why would you be going anyway, unless you're the sanding truck driver?

Re: Windshield Ice
when i know its gonna get cold i just grab a couple of the ( not bath ) towels . throw em over the windows front and back . in the mornin just pull em off and your good . i used to do the water method but if you have a chip or crack the temp difference from the water and the window will make it really spider . atleast thats what happened to mine ......

Re: Windshield Ice
Plug in the block heater, leave the heater on defrost. Always have a warm truck with a clear windshield.
