Default Siletz Tidewater

Fished Siletz on Saturday 10/20 (my fiftieth B-day). Caught none saw none caught. The Moorage said they had 4 fish weighed for 40 boats, 3 for 20 on Friday. Pulled spinners, anchored with Kwikfish and bobbered, no dice.

Also tried out my new Danielson "tuned" crabtraps rigged like you guys showed. Caught nine nice crabs while we were catching no salmon. Would have limited if we had just crabbed. Thanks for the great tip!!

If you go, bring your own bait.

CB,
could you pass how to rig and tune the Danielsons. I put some in Friday and only 2 crabs . I guess we could have checked them more often as well. Thanks CB

There is a thread with a picture from just a few days ago. The "tuning" is pretty simple: First, make sure your doors open and close easily. You may have too reshape the wire a bit. Then weight the doors so that they do not swing open in the current and let the keepers out. This is easy with a roll of pencil lead.

Next you get some 1/2"X 2' precut rebar from any good hardware store and cable-tie them to the bottom (or inside on the bottom) this will help the pot land right-side-up and keep it from dragging so much in the current. I used four pieces per pot but more wouldn't hurt.

We also learned to either cable tie the big doors closed or use a stout bungee on them. Else wise you will occasionally pull an empty pot with the big door swung open.

In 20' of water we used 60' of rope and double floats, clearly marked, with a loop out the upper float to catch with the boat hook. We also used pencil lead wrapped around the rope about ten feet down to sink the rope. I wrapped the lead in duct tape so its not banging into everything.

Takes about an hour to tune the first one. Twenty minutes after that.

Good luck.

Steve
