Re: Fishing with Kids
Sinker,
God Bless the little ones and you for taking them out there. I hope she learns to love the sport and take it with her thru out her life time. I know my parents took me as long as I can remember every where they went. Fishing is not a very expensive hobby, (can be by the time you add up the Boat and what not's) If you fish from the bank or from a pier, (That's where I learned to fish) and it's Just great to get outside to play. Also the fact of having an extra line means a better chance at more table fare. I almost took my daughter Today but she is almost 3. And it was raining pretty good today. I don't think we have her outfitted yet for the rainy season. I know one thing how kids get bored real quick, it's tough to keep them interested. That was also a great pic of her. Anticipating that Bite to come on at any time!!

Re: Fishing with Kids
She has far more fun running around the bank getting into stuff.
As long as no one else is around I'll let her throw pebbles in. She's done it before without me seeing her get ready to in front of others guys. They give me a mean look as they pound the heck out of the water with their lead.
I figure her throwing little pebbles isn't going to hurt anymore than their lead over and over.
She was pretty upset that we didn't get any salmon and didn't want to leave yet even though she said her eyes were as cold as ice cream. LOL
Nice fall day, beautiful colors along the bank.

Re: Fishing with Kids
Fish with your kids. Hunt with your kids. Work with your kids. I raised three sons in duck blinds, on trap ranges and bank/boat fishing. They each caught their first salmon and steelhead by age 8. Today one is a guide and two work with me. There is no finer life. And it all started with fishing and hunting together. Very lucky dad.

Re: Fishing with Kids
Sinker, my grandson just turned 4 in September.
We have custody and are learning parenting again at 52!
The kid is a fanatic about any kind of fishing and is a Guru on the computer with Bassmaster.
He's the best "downrigger boy" we've everhad in the boat. He thinks he's contributing when he gets topush the 'rigger buttons when we have a take-down and he's great at naming all the fish we put in the live-well!
We'd like to learn a bit about Alder Lake's smallmouth bass population next Spring. Let's hook-up for that.

Re: Fishing with Kids
My neighbor's sister and family came up from California in the first part of this month and I took her 12 year old son fishing. He had only caught a 20 inch catfish before the 9th of October. But we showed him what fishing was really all about.

Re: Fishing with Kids
I have two daughters, 7 & 9 who love to fish. I have always taken them whenever I can and I really enjoy just watching them and their curosity and trying to answer the bizillion questions they ask. My 9 year old got her first ho this year and the younger one is fuming because she hasn't caught one. I will take them in the DB this year for the first time, I believe they are now old enough and won't get bored to easily. And hopefully they will bring some luck to the boat.
If there are any families or parents with kids that would be interested in fishing east of Portland, I would be happy to hook up. I am a member of the Oregon Fishing Club and there is some nice private areas with small lakes and ponds that are stocked with fish so the kids can catch them. I took my daughters out to a small lake near Beavercreek on Saturday and we had a great time. This lake is stocked with trout, bass, bluegill and some cats. We had the whole place to ourselves and there are alot of cool things to do there, hike around, catch salamanders and just enjoy the peacefulness. My daughters would like to meet other kids who like fishing as much as they do.
Anyone interested, please let me know. My treat!

Re: Fishing with Kids
It's really bad that I work weekends, and thus can't fish with my kids when they are in school on my days off. When I brought home salmon last week, my boys' eyes bugged out and they begged me to take them, and I had to tell them I couldn't. We are looking into homeschooling. If we do that, they can go with me every time. Anybody here homeschool their kids?

Re: Fishing with Kids
NO ONE smiles bigger htan a kid with a fish!
I've been blessed with the opportunity and resources to teach Alex to do these things and I get a big rush whenever he gets a hookup and lands something to squeal and giggle about.

Re: Fishing with Kids
I to feel as I am one of the lucky few when it comes to fishing with my kid. She has fish with me from the age of four and now is 11 going on 16 if you know what I mean. We fish for Sturgeon , Salmon , as well as Steelhead. She has been one of the luckyest fisherman I know of when it comes to getting into the big ones. Hope she stays that way. Yeah, fishing with The Kid is great! He's a pretty darn good fisherman, too!
Oh wait, you said "with kids", and not "The Kid". Sorry.

Re: Fishing with Kids
Parker you show off. Your just like a little kide in need of kudos. Nice fish there young man. Who are the old folks with you?
My kids go with me quite often as long as their buddies are not coming over or something. Last year was cool. Grandpa, dad and at that time 8 year old Spencer (shaggy) went up to Eagle Creek. Spencer decided he wanted to learn to cast. I sat down and grandpa started to teach him. After a few minutes of instruction he was doing very nicely.
Ten minutes later he hooks his first Coho and lands it by himself. (Fair hooked mind you). Not long after that he snags one and I tell him he has to release it. A little sad he steps back up to the plate and bangs another one. Again this one is fair hooked and on his tag it goes. His first salmon limit by himself.
Not to be outdone by her younger brother his then 11 year old demands that she go the next day. She is a proficient caster so she had no trouble hookin up with a limit. Bragging rights for both and great memories with grandpa.
They both like the ocean and went when they were invited. Troopers they are. They don't care for cluster bank fishing but they do like the boat rides.

Re: Fishing with Kids
Great topic!
In fact, I have kind of a funny story from yesterday.
I took my two year old daughter for a ride over by Elk City to see if any fish were moving up, and we found a nice little bank access on tidewater, about four feet above the water with a mud bank going down to it. I sat down next to her and her snoopy pole and started casting bobber and eggs in the shallows near us. We fished for about an hour, and a guy in a sled comes by, "that's a nice catch" he says, referring to my daughter, and goes on to tell me about the bobber fisherman upstream nocking the chinook dead. I avert my eyes for a second, and he's saying "oh my god!" as my daughter goes sliding headfirst over the mud bank. She bobbed for a second before I snatched her out, but it sure did make the guy feel bad. He apologized for distracting me and kind of sped out of there, but my daughter was fine. She knows how to hold her breath because she's already had swimming lessons. I had her in dry clothes within a couple of minutes and she was singing in her carseat, but I'll bet that guy still feels bad.
Next time I'll bring a lifevest for the little daredevil. She kept saying "bath, bath" as we sat there, but I just couldn't convince her tidewater was a little too cold this time of year.
Kids are great to fish with!

Re: Fishing with Kids
Anytime my younger kids are where they may go in they have a life vest on. When my oldest was two, I turned my eyes for just a moment, and he went into the duck pond. All it takes is a moment. I'm glad she was okay.
