Re: Super Bowl Ads
Question is: what do you think the ads say about the state of our economy and society?
1. Yeah, they paid for the spot and that's no chump change. Most of 'em ran old commercials and the ones who ran fresh ads clearly didn't spend a lot on producing them.
2. There was a distinctly "multicultural" note about the ads this year.

Re: Super Bowl Ads
I noticed that there wasn't many new ones, but I did like the Shaq as a jockey, and the etrade baby. When he said I he just bought stock on line, and then did the baby puke thing. I about lost it.

Re: Super Bowl Ads
My favs were:
1.) Doritos with the HUGE mouse coming out of the wall and attacking the guy. Made my 11 & 9 year old daughters jump!
2.) The car commercial with Richard Simmons (too bad they swerved )
3.) E-Trade commercials with baby
4.) The coke commercial with the big parade balloons
5.) The car commercial with the screaming squirrel

Re: Super Bowl Ads
I agree about them being a disappointment. There was a couple good ones, but overall
For 2.3 million per 30 second slot, you think they'd come up with something a little better...

Re: Super Bowl Ads
It was mentioned that FOX would have all of these commercials listed on their MySpace page to take a look at if anyone missed them. I don't have the URL as I am not a "MySpacer". Just an FYI for anyone who is interested.

The Toyota one with the badger was kinda cute, but I've always liked badgers. I have a fantasy of throwing one into my boss' office.

Re: Super Bowl Ads
Trunk monkey was a bit of a laugh. Unibrow girl was kinda funny. Reality was that the commercials this year were pretty non-creative at best.
Worst commercial was the tow truck driver with jumper cables. That was just gross, tacky, idiotic and in no way funny. That drink will never see the light of day at my house. Horrible! Hope they fire their add agency over that stupid commercial.

None of them really stood out. This one was probably the best. Not a single one of them was impressive. The 'rocky' version of the draft horse was good, too.

I think it says that traditional media advertising is becoming less and less important and the ad companies know it. Their creativity is being directed into other areas like the internet. Online advertising and viral marketing is where things are headed now days. Super bowl Sunday ads are a legacy issue that is dying and will probably be completely dead in a few years.
2.3 million is nothing, agencies like Right Media and Double Click see this much money pass through their online exchanges every couple of hours if not minutes. Single online contracts in those exchanges can be worth millions to hundreds of millions a month for a single company or network on those exchanges. Traditional advertising is to slow and doesn't provide nearly the return on investment that internet advertising does nor does it reach as many eyes.
If I can serve my advertisement online in front of thousands people world wide every couple of minutes 24 hours a day, why would I spend a lot of time and energy on a commercial that will only air a few times and it's viewing audience is primarily in the US and that only a fraction of the amount of people will see as opposed to my online ads?
Plus because Right Media and Double Click are tied into search my ads are targeted at people who are already interested in the types of things I want to sell rather than the cr@p shoot that TV advertising provides.
The times they are a changing.....

- Bud's "Hank"
- Victoria's Secret
A couple chuckles from the rest but over-all... pretty ho-hum.
Did think the CareerBuilder's "Firefly" showed creative thinking.

While I agree with your statement, I think that I good ad agency or group could realize the potential of airing and new commercial on the superbowl and then playing online as they have done this year, no matter what the media, the more exposure the better. I think that the TV ad is underestimated in todays time. If you think about it, when a commercial is on that is all you see, hear, and possibly thing about. When you or on the internet, most adds get ignored, imo.
I also believe that media control over what is allowed how a lot to do with the down turn of the superbowl commercial. It is just not worth the risk to do a good commericial any more with all the hypersensative parents, etc. that are out there watching and waiting for the littlest thing to start a huge deal about it.

Re: Super Bowl Ads
I thought there were a few genuinely good ads. The best were the Budweiser clydesdale/rocky themed ad, the Will Ferrell Bud Light at, and the Victoria's Secret ad.
My fiance cried at the Bud one, we both laughed at the Will Ferrell one, and the VS one certainly got my attention!

My favorite had to be the Pepsi-Max that ran early in the game. Most of the rest of them were of little value to me.

I would like to score on one of those trunk monkeys. They'd definitely cut down on the need for car burglar alarms and there would be darn few repeat offenders.
