Spinning reels and braided Dacron
Well are they compatible? Thinking of trying it but wanted to get some opinions first.

Re: Spinning reels and braided Dacron
Stew: I use firewire (14#) Works great. Do not use the tuff, or other limber line as it gets wrapped around the rod tip too easily and you could snap the rod.

Re: Spinning reels and braided Dacron
Stew,
If you would like, lets figure out a day in the next couple of weeks that you and I could go fishin on the Chehalis River and I will let you see for yourself how compatible they are. If you can't make it then let me say this, 20lb Power Pro on all my spinning reels for the last three years...zero problems...can't vouch for other lines. Email me if you would like.
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Spinning reels and braided Dacron
I also would like to know the best of the latest superbraids to use on spinning reels. I read on the back of the Firewire box it is a braid that is intended for both level wind and spinning reels. I'll check out the Power Pro too Jim. ... Chehallis? Can I come too?

I hadn't tried Power Pro on the spinning reels yet, but I will now!

Re: Spinning reels and braided Dacron
Caused serious injury lately to many fine steelies and silvers using my Okuma Epix with 20 lb. power pro. The only problem is that if you set, even less than usual, your 10 pound leader goes "poink". Serious stuff, that power Pro.

Re: Spinning reels and braided Dacron
Got tuned-in to PowerPro last year by Jim and I gotta say it's the best stuff I've ever seen.
No memory, no coils, no problems. I have 50# (12#diameter) on my big reels and 20# on a couple spinning reels. I love the stuff.
It will, however wrap around a tip easily and when downrigger fishing, be sure you've not done that. SNAP! as the 'rigger ball goes down.

Re: Spinning reels and braided Dacron
I have used the braided high-tech lines for years in the higher tests (50+ pounds) on saltwater-sized spinning reels and have been pleased with the performance (and longevity).
On smaller reels, however, Berkeley FireLine really performs better on spinning gear (for which it was developed), outcasting by distance of about 10% mono of equal diameter (30# FireLine is roughly the diameter of 12# mono).
At least that's my experience ....

Re: Spinning reels and braided Dacron
I have been using the 20# flame Berkley Fireline on my stradic 2000/4000 spinning reels for about three years and absolutely love it. It floats, no memory, no tangles.. and it's thin... 20# .... casts a mile..
Great for float fishing.... I color the first 4-6 feet black w/ a shrpie marker and use 30"+ of mono leader when float fishing.. I won't go back to mono..
Plus the fireline last longer...

Re: Spinning reels and braided Dacron
i also love the fire wire, i've also used the power pro quite a bit, we spolled up all our h-but reels with power pro and is truely awsome stuff, started using power pro about 4 or 5 years ago. i've gone to using fireline on my bobber rods now, don't know why but like it a little better for some reason, at least on bobber rods i do. couple things to really pay attention to when using them, 1st when putting onto a spinning reel, i like to put a little piece of tape on the spool, gives the line something to bite on, otherwise it tends to spin on the spool if you don't get it on super tight! 2nd, when putting the line on the reels, put it on AS TIGHT AS POSSIBLE, these lines are bad for embedding on top of themselves, if yo don't put them on tight.
the part i love, when you set the hook it's like a direct connection! be carefull, can't do those monster hooksets anymore when you've got that mono leader attached, otherwise you get to feel the POP of your leader breakin!

Re: Spinning reels and braided Dacron
Good point, chumsalmon, and one I don't recall being addressed here, at least not recently.
When these line first came out, a number of fishermen were returning new reels because they couldn't tighten the drag. In actuality, the line was slipping on the spool arbor, making the drag totally ineffective.
All of the high-tech (spectra-based) lines are slippery. Using even a small amount of mono backing will prevent this slippage. Altenately, when tying directly to the spool arbor, a drop of super glue immediately prior to filling the reel will also alleviate the problem.

Re: Spinning reels and braided Dacron
I got around to tring out this fireline on my spinning reel this weekend and can't believe how good it worked. It casts farther and easier than mono and in the stronger sizes it doesnt coil off the spool like mono does. It floats to help control the line better when fishing with floats also. Im sold.
