Am I crazy???
I'm real new to sturgeon fishing and I have a question. Since I don't have a boat, my wife has hid the checkbook and the credit cards, and I hate to keep asking my friends who do have boats if I can "tag along", would I be crazy to try bank fishing for sturgeon with a medium/heavy salmon rod, an ambassador reel and 20# line? In a perfect world I would just go out and buy a new rod and reel, but I can't... and Christmas is a long ways off. Any advice?

Re: Am I crazy???
Back before I got my boat, thats pretty much the setup I would use and had no trouble at all...of course, if you're targeting the big boys i would get a little nervous...but I've never had a problem with a meduim to heavy action rods from the city docks where I'm at.

Re: Am I crazy???
I'd hate to hear the story of the one that got away, or the one about the broken rod. And I hear you on the money thing. So, if your in the Portland metro area, I have a rod you can borrow in the meantime. Even though Christmas isn't here yet, the spirit is, especially with times like these. Send me an email.

Re: Am I crazy???
Bajaspecial - I was sitting here at my desk feeling kind of overwhelmed by world events and personal events, and read your reply. Thanks - you just made my day a little bit better. Sometimes I look at all my tackle and poles and feel bad that I can't go fishing more often. Maybe I should look at them and be thankful. Thanks for making my cup half full!

Amen to that Ripple. Makes a guy feel good to see people want to help others. To bad that sentiment doesn't run a little deeper in our country.
On the question of bank fishing for sturgeon, not to change the subject too much, what sort of a rig would you use for bait? And what bait is preferred?
Or is this a good archive search?

Re: Am I crazy???
bajaspecial,
In my 35 years I have rarely seen such kind generosity. I work in a field where I have to deal with the real bad side of society most of the time ( thus: fishing = relaxation), so to read your post made me feel pretty darn good. Given the current situation that our country is dealing with, we do need to stick together and it starts with us. You obvously know that. I may look you up to borrow your pole, but first I think I'm gonna try and win my wife over with a little whining.

Re: Am I crazy???
FRESH smelt. Pickled squid works well too.
I usually use the pre-tied sturgeon leaders, 6/7 hooks, BARBLESS. Tie a loop at top, then tie the leftover to the leader in a knot. Then, using a "poker stick", hoop the loop onto the stick, and poke through mouth of smelt, exiting near tail, and pull leader through bait until hook is at mouth. Then put a half-hitch with the leader around tail. For your main line, first slip on a "slider swivel", then tie on a BIG BIG snap swivel (the kind that has a bend in it so it will not unsnap) onto your main line. Then just clip your leader loop to the snap swivel, attach you favorite weight to the sliding swivel, and FISH ON! Hopefully!
Thanks everyone for the encouragement. Really appreciate it!
And salmon i'll take any day!

Litz...if you borrow one of my poles, then you could show your wife what you want for Christmas!
