Yes, there are inshore spots...generally hit or miss...not as consistent as the deep water spots.

The only spots I know are off Pacific City, which is a 15 mile run from Tillamook Bay. Unless you beach launch at PC, they are not really practical targets.

There is also a spot up by Nehalem Bay, but I don't have the numbers. Maybe some of the other dogs do.

In my limited experience, the inshore halis are either at a spot or they are not. On off days, you just don't catch them. So you go lingcod or coho fishing instead....it's all good.

It is very hit and miss, but if you put in the hours you can find fish. I did not start until august last season, but I got fish every time drifting across the flats out of garibaldi. I would not call it hot fishing, but we averaged a fish every 2-3 hours. I went out to halibut hill once and will not go for halibut again out there. Good luck.

There are some spots north of Newport near the lighthouse. I bet they are most everywhere...just more miss in some areas than others.

Halibut can be caught from Depoe Bay to Newport in 180-230' of water. You will have to put in some time but they are there. You might even get lucky and get a few skates too.

I know what you're talking about. I saw that on a TV show once. I can't remember who was starring in that show.

One should consider the benefits of nearshore halibut...Not spending all the time and money going out 17 miles, reduced boat size and equipment necessary for safe passage, more weather windows available for nearshore fishing than offshore, less crowded. I think it worth the time to put into finding the fishery for those with smaller boats. You are going to catch lings in the process. You also dont need a reel with the capacity that you need for 770'. My boat is 18', but seaworthy for its size. Probably more seaworthy than a similar size Arima. In perfect weather conditions, I would go out to the Bananna Banks, but its going to have to be one of those east wind days that is dead calm with a forecast that offers me a lot of reserve time. I think guys like me are better off with learning the inshore fishery.

You won't be catching many lingcod in the nearshore. You will also need to throw them back on all depth days. Most of the fishing is over sand, mud, some rock and gravel. If you snag it will likely be on derelict (ghost) crab pots. Check your lines once in awhile for sea pens. If you hook a sand dab leave it on. The Halibut love to eat them and the skates usually stay away from them. It might also surprise you that the North most drift that I have for inside 40 hali's is not much closer than some of the Halibut spots on the E side of the Pile and these are actually shallower than spots I fish inside 40. Take your time and explore. Once you find them there are usually a few more in the same area.

Any nearshore spots within 2-3 miles of a beach launch? I would love to target one from my kayak.

I agree with Walt, I have caught plenty of halibut inside 40, but you really have to work for them.

ok...so that's how you wanna be...

Although I do agree with you about near shore. I have run my 17 Arima to the 124.35 line straight out of Garibaldi but I'm not goin' much farther...I do run north to Manzanita and south to Cape lookout and their are fish to be found. I have heard, but not yet targeted, halibut in the flats in the deeper water off the submerged rocks west of Oceanside, 120 -150'. That's for next year when I can't get back to the 124.35 line...

I have heard of a very few small ones 30-35" being caught around the red&white can in Aug.

So that's what, 30 miles or so to the 124.35 line? That is a good run! So you have radar? Long way to go without collision protection if you get caught in fog. Thats my biggest concern. I really dont have anyplace to mount a radar antenna on my small boat. Furano now has a small unit that weighs only 10#, but you gotta get it above your line of sight and mine is a stand up helm. Would be interesting to see ideas for the lightest possible solution to mounting a 10# antenna.

I've only made that run under perfect conditions. I have 2 GPS systems, 2 vhf, compass and depth finder. I 'm getting a tower built by wetfly very soon and I'll probably mount the small lowrance on the tower by June. It will interface with my GPS and depth finder which are separate units for redundancy sake...you ever wanna run out of garibaldi give me a shout. We can hunt fish and test that seaworthiness thing.

Get yourself a good current paper chart, do some studying and then start exploring.

Just like lots of good spots, look for structure, current breaks, funnels for food, etc.

Unhappy Re: Inshore hali?

I put 15 halibut in my boat last year and ALL were inside 40 off the lighthouse at Newport.

Some days very good and limits in a couple hours.....other days no luck at all. One day we caught 10 for our 4 keepers. All right at the edge of the 40 fathom line.

And plenty of skates.......
