Probably had the water all to yourself, also?? Great time of the year for sturgeon, when everyone's concentrated on salmonoids. Thanks for the report!!

Congradulations There Rod. You finally got a fish this year. We all dream about great days like that. Calm water, biting fish... how was the food. Any brauts or danish's? That always makes a great trip.

Thanks for the report!!

What was your choice for bait for the day?

May I ask where the fishery is? I would like to try and catch a sturgeon on Saturday. Also, did you use puple label smelt? Seems like with the shaker action that would burn through the bait pretty fast!!

thanks in advance,

TPM

The fishery is below Bonniville. Dodson I think. Last I heard the facilities are not that great.

You can also use half a smelt to stretch your bait out.

Purple label refers to herring. The fishery is Exit 35 off I 84. Rig smelt whole or half or in combo with shrimp or whatever else you want to experiment with. You don't have to go far once in the water. Good holes up and down stream. Just look for boats and be cautious when anchoring.

If you are low on smelt or want to conserve it, don't use a whole smelt. They ain't comin' up and lookin' at it. Cut pieces and wrap it on your hook, combined with shrimp, worms, squid, etc., with stretchy thread.

Make sure you leave plenty of the end of the hook exposed. 5/0 to 7/0 works good for this.

With a whole smelt, the very first SWING after you put it in the water, you either have a fish, or reel in to use another yet another entire smelt.

With a good wad of the above, you can rip many times and you know you still have bait, and even perhaps catch 5 to 10 fish on the same bait, before it needs replacing.

Stink it up with your scent of choice.

Strugeon, bottom feeders or not, get real picky sometimes, so make sure you have a mix of bait, just in case. Don't forget they love nightcrawlers too, which are cheap and can be wrapped up in your piece of smelt or whatever.

Rick

Here you go, couple of "good buddies" who have expressed concern about my no fishing posts, just cartoons.

Some good Sturgeon fishing advice for all that have never tried it and might like it.

Guess they have been "bothering" some folks.

Will have to write six page posts describing obvious and boring stuff I suppose. Will let it drop now. See ya.

Silly man, you don't have to write a word. A picture is worth a thousand words!
