There are some, but not many charter fishers out of Kauai. If you want to fish, hop to Kona. I know some good captains there.

Drifty,
A little different trip in Kauai that I can recommend is fishing for peacock bass (freshwater). My wife and I did it two years ago with John Jardin of JJ's Big Bass Tours. He was great and the fishing was great. I'm not a big bass fisherman but these things are agressive and can get big. You only find these fish in S. America, Florida and Hawaii so it is something unique to try. 2 years ago his email address was bigbass@aloha.net and his phone number was 808-332-9219. He'll pick you up at your hotel and you'll have a great time.

I was there last Christmas...the price to go for Peacock was about the same as getting a charter. And, check ocean conditions ahead of time...some of those guys will go out in some nasty seas.

Also, I would HIGHLY recommend getting this book...an overwhelming amount of great info. http://www.wizardpub.com/kauai/kauai.html

We were in Kauai about 6 years ago and I couldn't find a charter so I hung out at a boat launch until I found a friendly boat owner and I offered him money to take me out bottom fishing. He agreed but made fun of my steelhead rod. Went so far as to get on his marine radio and tell his friends what a dinky rod I had. Well, my little Loomis landed everything it hooked including an 8 pound bonefish. I guess I got lucky and didn't hook anything big.

Drifty,

I went out about 5 years ago on a charter. It doesn't seem like it was too difficult to find one either. Just look in the yellow pages or ask around a bit. The boat I went out on caught fish for a local restaurant. If you caught a fish, you were invited to dinner that night at the restaurant. It was an awesome experience. There were some very large billfish caught that day. Wish I were going. What an cool place. If you haven't been before, you are going to love it.

Default Kauai Charters?

I was wondering if anyone here has taken any charters out of Kauai? Just looking for any stories/recomendations. I'll be there next week looking for fish.

Thanks for all the good info guys. I have seen the bass tours before but I didn't know they were peacock bass I'll definatly have to check that out sounds like a blast. Can you fish for these any time or do you have to have any special permits, hire a guide ect? This would be a great alternative if the sea is nasty.
