Crabbing Lessons
Crabbed and fished at Nehalem this weekend. Wound up with 16 dungees and no fish in about 4 hours. Learned alot about crabbing and that salmon jump because they have no middle finger.
Our shallowest pot was in 6' of water. You could see the bottom. The minute the pot touched down, the bottom came to life. Crabs from up to 30' away rose up out of the sand and immediately ran over to the pot and jumped in. They were in there in no more than a minute. So I pulled it up and they were all too small. But I learned that pots fish fast and far, so spread em out. We played with these crabs for a while, and I also learned that crabs CAN get out of
pots, even round pots with tunnels and doors. And they will, the minute the bait is gone. So always fish with a bait cup to keep em interested when the hanging bait is
gone, and keep your hanging bait on a good pin or well secured with wire or tie wraps, because if a crab pulls it out of the pot, they will all leave to follow it.
Too bad I didn't bring my dive gear. I could have limited by snorkeling and picking them up in 6' of water. Next time. Can't wait until December, ocean crabbing reopens
for easy limits of big hardshells on the outside between storms.
