Shedding Lab
What brush would you recommend for removing hair from a Lab.

Re: Shedding Lab
Fine curry comb you can buy at any feed store. Mine folds together and works great. I have two Labs and they shed a ton. Hope this helps.

Sheep shears.
Seriously, I have 3 labs and I use a slicker brush, it is a fine tooth brush that has a slight bend in the brisels, which are metal. Removes lots of loose hair. Sometimes, I have to clean it 3 or 4 times before one dog is finished.

Re: Shedding Lab
Furminator is the best I have ever seen. Pretty spendy but you can pick one up in ebay for a good price. HT

Re: Shedding Lab
The Furminator is a good tool but have never used one on a lab. Something that works great on cats is my Griff......No more cat.....no more cat hair.......

Re: Shedding Lab
I second the Furminator. It's incredible!!! All you have to worry about is making sure you have something to put all the hair in that you'll take off. And DO NOT use this thing inside!!!!

Re: Shedding Lab
Don't mess with combs. It will come off on it's own free will. Usually on the couch, or in the back seat of the truck.
Planning on having company over will help release another pound or more. If you plan on having company over this afternoon, and plan on entertaining in the back seat of the Ford, the dog will actually go bald.
The bilge of the boat can support up to 3 bushels of lab hair before a 1500gph pump clogs. Interestingly enough, 3 bushels will also clog 2 1500gph pumps.

Re: Shedding Lab
I have to agree on the Furminator. If the mods will permit, www.furminator.com or for that matter furminator dot com
It's an awesome tool and gets all the loose undercoat out. Just use it outdoors, so the birds will be happy with all the loose hair to use.
I have a Finnish Spitz who has a thick undercoat. I can brush her out with my furminator about once every 1-2 weeks and have almost no loose hair indoors.

Furminator and a shedding rake. You still need to do it every day.

Re: Shedding Lab
Furminator. I just got one for my Lab Chow mix and it works great on her fine undercoat.

Re: Shedding Lab
Just pet it out. A firm hand outside will take alot of loose hair off the dog. Most brushes don't work very well for what you pay IMO for labs.

Re: Shedding Lab
Thanks for all the input/help.
I have been trying the couch, bed, truck and cloth collectors for the last couple years and they do work great although the wife is not too happy with it. Started giving her a bath once a week after duck hunting to remove some of the mud and I can just bout fill the tub with hair so figured I would try something else. Can't wait for the newborn to start crawling or walking as I am sure she will rip most of the hair out for me.

Re: Shedding Lab
I've got a curry comb that looks like an air bob sole. Works great on labs, chessies and horses. Less than $10 at any feed store.

Re: Shedding Lab
I have to go with the furminator....and have a good vacuum handy. I use one on my lab and pointer about once a week. Tons of hair comes off them, ok less than an ounce I imagine but it's a lot.

Re: Shedding Lab
Yes there are dogs that shed less, poodles, chihuahuas, yorkies, Wirehairs and such, but we are talking about great hunting dogs and family companions here!
And beautiful dogs to look at also!

Re: Shedding Lab
Okay...We should stay on topic. The topic is which brush is best for a shedding lab, not which dog sheds the least..we end up doing the my dog sheds less than your dog routine... HT

Re: Shedding Lab
Most of our Lab hair end up in the pool. But this time of year (the pool is frozen) there is noticeably more hair in the house. We could stand to have less shedded hair in the house but we couldn't stand not having our Labs
