While not a professional... "Stickfish" is our local radio expect. If you are having trouble, you might start with him.

I understand.
If he can't help you with that, then I'm sure he probably knows who the good shops are.

Try sending him a PM. He is very active on here.

If you are looking for a shop to do this I can reccmend D&R Communications in Clackamas. They have done allot of work for me in the past.
I would see if Stickfish want to tackle it first though.

I have insaled 100's, in cars, trucks, boats, ect, ect.
The thing you have to have done is have the SWR checked, match the intenna, to the raido, some have screw devices, some you just clip a chunk out of them, the coex can be 5 foot, and some 15 foot.
I run a Cobra 40, it has 10 foot of coex, and mated up to a 250 watt kicker, the coex from the kicker is 8 foot long, I can talk to the valley, and as far away to Idaho, and for the record, a kicker is not leagule, FCC would have a hay day with yea.
Been useing a C.B for 30+ years, good insurance when nothing else worked.
You can buy a C.B for $100.00 bucks, and a intenna for 45 bucks, have someone in the know hook it up, and adjust the SWR, and your good to go.
The intenna, should be 5 foot long, and a power one would be best, also a power mike would help.
Just my .

Which would be a better way to go on a limited budget... ham or cb? Or am I comparing tuna and steelhead?

The install is pretty straight forward.

There is a boot around the steering column - push a screw driver around the edge of it to loosen it - use that to pass the power and coax cable though.

Use large 10 gauge or better wire and directly connect the radio to the battery positive terminal (THE RED WIRE) - make sure there is an adquate fuse in line. Solder and seal the connectors. Next cut the Black wire as short as possible and ground that to the chassis ground of the vehicle. The shorter the better. It is also a good idea to have a fuse in line here but not necessary.

Route the coax to the site where you will install the antenna. Note if you park your truck in a parking garage you will now have issues with that. Most of the antennas use a 3/8" stud and those are pretty sturdy. If you have a heavy fiberglass coiled whip like a firestick use a HD spring also. I always used a trunk lip mount and screwed that to the lip under the front hood. It take three self taping screws and maybe a cuple washers to level the mount.

Follow the instructions in the tips section on soldering on a connector.

Once you are done I'd be glad to check the SWR for you or help with the connector. Drilling holes and what not I usually let you do that, but I'd gladly watch.

If that doesn't suit your fancy go see the guys at D&R in clackamas.

Have fun - good buddy!

Oh when you get tired of the blather on 11 meters - its time to study for your ham radio license and leave that circus for those more inclined to lousy language, manners and other overt displays of poor behavior.
