Default "last days on earth"

did any one watch "last days on earth" on the history channel? what an interesting show on how fast we are using up the resources and raising the earths temp - they interviewed several scientists from different parts of the world and they all had the same sentiment - humans are destroying this earth at such an exponential rate, its mind blowing really.

was just curious if anyone else watched this and what they thought - doom n gloom or serious reality?

Silliness and fluff.

From the Denver Post ---

...bit of crazy-making infotainment that teeters between tabloid titillation and scientific what-ifs.

I wasnt really asking so much what the paper says as much as what you thought - of course only if you watched it.

I'll have to tivo it. I watched their show recently about what the earth will be like without humans and that was really interesting.

As for this issue, I'm hoping we'll find a way to colonize another planet before we become extinct on this one. Some days I don't think we'll make it in time, other days I'm a bit more optimistic.

From the same article in the Denver post you provided the link to:

"ABC News "20/20" offers a rather sensationalized title for what turns out to be a scientifically valid two-hour program. Just because the scenarios sound like science fiction doesn't mean they aren't potentially accurate."

What was more interesting was Life After Man, which showed how quickly plants would take over the places we live and how the animals and insects would change quickly. Animals we keep as pets wouldn't likely survive long. Rats, mice and cockroaches would decline in numbers greatly as they are scavengers and foragers that depend on messy people for most of what they eat and the places they live. Power plants would drop off grid as they reach limits - coal plants and natural gas plants would go first as they require human input to keep them stoked, nuclear would reach shut-down parameters within a couple weeks, but hydro might keep generating for years if water conditions don't require impoundment adjustments. The premise at the start of the program underscored that there is no expectation of humans departing the world and that no one can imagine a situation that would selectively remove humans from earth without some cataclysmic event that would affect all other living things as well. But it was an interesting diversion.

All you have to do is spend a few days in New Orleans to see the truth in this expectation. It is truly amazing to see what the plants can accomplish in a few humid years.

Didn't really have to watch it.
I read "scientific" forecasts of the future such as the "Population Bomb", "Ecoscience" and "Famine 1975" about forty or so years ago.
I learned then that about one third of us would starve by 1975 and that oil, critical metals and other commodities would run out by about 2000.
I did not hear about global warming since scientists then were warning us about the impending ice age within a few decades.
I really don't need to watch or read the recycled versions of the same old stuff.
