We have no trains or subways here, where I live.....and only one two-way bridge, but it's 60 miles from where I live, so this is how I go to the "mainland". Fortunately, I work on the island, so I don't need to commute to work, but many do, everyday....
We have no malls, fast food restaurants, or high-rise buildings either. We do have trees tho
This picture is the loading dock on the mainland. The white building at the foot of the dock is a four story apartment building, just to give you an idea of how big our ferries are.
Here is the ferry docking on the island I live (and from where I took the shot). That is another island in the foreground.
We have service going each way, two ferries usually run at the same time to insure that they keep up with the traffic demand. During the summer, when tourist visit, or holiday weekends, etc, the wait can be up to two hours or so, sitting in line in your car. We NEVER go near the ferries then!
Here they are passing in the channel.
And yes....it can get real rough out there. I've been on the ferries when they had to tack to and fro to avoid leaving their broadside into the weathers pounding. It was more than just a little daunting
