Well just looking at some of your other posts, being that your a high school student with a wife and 2 children. I think I would take that money and apply it towards some more education. It's tough being that young and having a family. I know I've done it.

The irony is that those that don't pay taxes are the first to get this "refund" and those that make over 75K/year get nothing. I guess I'll just keep paying so that those who pay nothing can still get free money.

Actually that is only where your rebate will begin to faze out if single. I believe that if married, your rebate check doesn't begin to fase out until you hit 150k. Also individuals with incomes up to 87k and couples up to 174k will get partial rebates. The caps will be higher for those who have kids. Kids = an additional $300 a piece!

Those with children will also get more of a "refund" than those without, even though parents pay less into the system. It's not a refund or economic stimulus, it's wealth redistribution.

Re: Economy boost ,what would you buy
Looks like I'd be in the top category, married, decent income, 3 kids = $2100. It's always nice to get some cash, but the reality is that amount doesn't do much for us. I suppose maybe we'd do something for the kids with it.

as difficult as that may be to swallow, it is this group of people who will most benefit the economy when they spend their money. Why, because it probably will be on basics, food, heat, gas. Things that are purchased locally helping the local economy.
I'll either put it into savings, or pay down a high interest second mortgage I took out to purchase a new boat. Neither one will help the economy much.

Ya the folks with kids getting additional money per kid really burns me. Wealth redistribution is what this really is and it's not going to do anything for a stimulus. Sorry we should call this what it really is, a handout.

Re: Economy boost ,what would you buy
No particular purchases for me, Halibut/Ocean season starts about the time the Checks arrive so that should help with the high Fuel prices, I don't see this as a big boost to my personnel Economic situation tho, as my wages are still not keeping up with inflation, but every little bit helps.

Oh I wouldn't call it a hand out, more like a very expensive loan! And even worse it's our kids and grandkids that are going to be responsible to pay it back!
But don't get me wrong, I will take the money it will go nicely in our vacation fund to take our son to disneyland!

I just don't get this argument, isn't having kids a choice or were you forced to procreate at gun point? And the fact that you made the CHOICE to procreate (oh ya it's not a "miracle" its a bodily function that happens all the time in every species) should you be entitled to more? You have a CHOICE on how many to have, you don't HAVE to spend thousands for sports, you don't HAVE to buy them a car, you don't HAVE to do anything. You can actually do what people before you did for thousands of years and make your kids learn that sometimes life sucks and you have to do without. You made a choice now live with it! I made a choice to buy a boat, maybe that should entitle me to a extra refund to pay for gas and gear. I really don't care what it cost to pay for your CHOICES you made them now YOU pay for them not ME. If you can't afford them and need feel entitled to extra compensation than everyone else because of that then maybe you shouldn't have any.

Ya and some of our children will go on to fight wars for us or become doctors and nurses fireman or police officers to care for you in your old age. Other children will go on to finance your social security when you cant work any more. Some of our kids will develope products and companys that might make your life a little easyer or last longer. Kids really make the world go round. No one forced us but some day you might be greatfull for our kids.
I dont know about you but IM going to Disney land. Then Ill start planing my Alaska adventure!!! THANKS GEORGE W.

Ahhh, sounds like a product of Generation “Me.” It’s only $300 bucks for a kid, geeze.
And it’s not a “biological” function like sitting on the toilet. But you’ll have no idea unless you have one. The only treasure in life are your children.

I don't think those of us with kids demanded or even asked for the additional rebate, so being angry at us doesn't solve anything. The goal of the rebates is to stimulate the economy. I bet people with children are more likely to spend and those without are more likely to save (generally).
I'm not an economics expert and do not know if this plan will help the economy long term, but if I were giving out money with the goal of stimulating the economy, I would give a higher % to those who I thought would spend it.
BTW, I do just fine taking care of my family and I've never received any government assistance.

Snow Board Gear for the oldest blood sucking "Choice" I made since it will come about the time of her birthday that I gladly choose to celebrate. Than maybe that elliptical that Mrs Sea wants and anything left goes into my toy/gas fund more likely cover my share of fuel this summer - well maybe

I'll probably use my rebate to help outfit my new boat and spend a little more than we would have on our upcoming trip to Disneyland. Even though I have 2 kids, I might sock a little away for a a rainy day as well.

Re: Economy boost ,what would you buy
I'll do exactly what the politicians and economists DON'T want me to do.
I'll put it toward paying some more credit down, and it won't go into the economy (not directly). Sure looking like more and more folks will be doing that, rather than rushing out and spending it.
Posts from above are correct though; in terms of an economic stimulus, it would actually be BETTER to put MORE money into the low income people's hands, because they are much more likely to spend it outright.

Re: Economy boost ,what would you buy
It is communist that I payed out as much as I did in taxes and will recieve absolutely zero for a rebate. It is counter intuitive. Please remember you will be paying taxes on that rebate next year. The Feds were right about one thing if I got the rebate it would have gone into investments. If you are getting the rebate I sincerely hope you enjoy it.

Kidding, of course. it will be divided into two parts, one part for the family and the other for the family! An extra bump in June wont hurt my feelings. At $3.00 + a gal. it will mean a few more trips to the beach.

Re: Economy boost ,what would you buy
not gonna spend it...gonna invest it abroad in emerging markets.
The smart thing to do would be for the people in debt to actually pay some of it.

Re: Economy boost ,what would you buy
I'm not going to plan on getting it, and when I get it, I'm going to pretend like I didn't. It's gonna get tucked away in the bank as rainy day money. I don't think we'll be getting a whole lot anyways, we might have made too much last year.

Into the bank it goes. I think it's a really bad idea, but hey, it is an election year, go figure.

Re: Economy boost ,what would you buy
My kids will get $300 each and they can do as they please with it....they'll most likely opt to put it in the bank as they do all their money, they are 4 & 5 years old. My wife and I will take a short weekend gettaway. I really wish I had read this earlier though.

As soon as the first batch of checks go out, the advertising from the retail stores is gonna be extensive.

If you don't encourage folks to have kids today, there won't be any tax PAYERs tomorrow.

Re: Economy boost ,what would you buy
Enough "whimsey", Dave. Let's talk about real unavoidable deal - taxes!
Since the Feds are calling this a tax-rebate, based on 2007 filings, what they're really doing is retroactively changing the '07 tax tables. Therefore, I don't believe this will be a taxable event for 2008 Federal taxes (sure hope I'm right).
But Oregon state tax situation is a lot less clear. Thoughts? Where's those tax guys when ya need 'em?

Bingo! Someone finally nailed it. Election year handout which is why it is mainly going to the lower income brackets. This has little to do with economic stimulus.

I’m going to laugh by butt off if it falls apart in the Senate. After all the hype and media attention? If it blows up there will be a bunch of politician with egg on their face. And that’s always a good thing.
I don’t think it will though. No politician is going to stand between the American people, and a fat check they promised them. Plus it was in the media before it was even agreed upon, which makes it kind of hard to stand against it when everyone now expects a check.

Well thanks for clearing that up for me, but how do I tell you apart. Will one of you be Super Fluke 1 and the other Super Fluke 2?

Huh?
So your telling me that "group of people" doesn't spend their money on "basics, food, heat, gas" the other 11 months out of the year?
The truth is if you want to stimulate the economy you give it to the poor people. They'll blow through it much faster than the guys that already have good jobs and incomes whom end up banking it.

Re: Economy boost ,what would you buy
Sounds like a bad idea since it doesn't sound like I'm a refund candidate.

Re: Economy boost ,what would you buy
Don't know the particulars of this "rebate" yet, but if it's like the one W gave out in '01(?), it's no rebate or handout at all. It may be (like last time) just an advance on your '08 return.

So given the "talk like a high school" grammatical issue there, I'm having a tough time knowing if this is junior or senior.
