Fishing Boat Helps Rescue Sinking Tug
Just saw this on KGW.
http://www.kgw.com/news-local/storie....5377ccd8.html
At the time of this posting it didn't name the fishing vessel. Anyone from Tillamook have more info?

Re: Fishing Boat Helps Rescue Sinking Tug
Glad everyone was rescued. Good job to whomever it was that helped out!
A question though - since it was only 4 miles out, is it likely that someone will try to salvage the tug? Or will it just be left there?

Re: Fishing Boat Helps Rescue Sinking Tug
The rescue was by Doug Brown aboard the commercial vessel Kilchis.

Re: Fishing Boat Helps Rescue Sinking Tug
Right on! Doug has been crabbing out of Garibaldi since the late 70's/early 80's and was the original owner of Garibaldi Charters. Doug is the one that got my dad into running charters after they were commercial buddy boats for salmon on dories then bigger trollers in the 70's.
Way to go Doug! Joe Okenfell who owns/runs Siggi-G charters also works for Doug on and running the Kilchis for crab after Doug runs it the first couple months of the season.
Nice to have quality guys around to save the day!

Re: Fishing Boat Helps Rescue Sinking Tug
Correction.
I know it was the Kilchis that rescued the tugboat crew.
I am assuming it was Doug Brown.
I have a meeting tonight with Doug and Joe. I will ask who the hero(es) actually is (are).

Re: Fishing Boat Helps Rescue Sinking Tug
I have been aboard the tug Joe Foss, it was being Skippered by a very close friend of mine.
It was the oldest tug in Foss's fleet, purchased surplus from the Navy, I believe from the WWII era.
Does anyone know why it was headed for Depoe Bay?

Re: Fishing Boat Helps Rescue Sinking Tug
OK Mike here's the real deal.
I spoke with Joe Ockenfels this evening. He was running the Kilchis, Doug was not aboard. Joe had two crew with him. They were 4 miles away when the call was put out. they raced to the scene. picked everyone from the water. The 47' motor lifeboat arrived shortly thereafter and all survivors were transferred. Joe and his crew are the heroes.

Re: Fishing Boat Helps Rescue Sinking Tug
They mentioned that they had made repairs to a leak before it sank.
I'd like to hear more about what happened and what was the cause.

Re: Fishing Boat Helps Rescue Sinking Tug
Wow, lucky they were that close. A few more minutes in the water and it would most likely have ended very poorly. Well done rescue party.

They all had survival suits on. No big rush says Joe.
