Hot Food While Fishing.
With the cold weather a comming it has me cravn' hot food in the boat again. So far I have been known to cook hot dogs for the kids on the intake wraped in tin foil but usually I end up eating cold food for convenience.
O.K. ifishers tell us your best hot boat meal and how you cook it. Simplicy is the key but I know we have at lest one classically trained chief among us.
Help us break the binding chains of a cold food forever!

Go to a nice big truckstop like Flyin'J and take a look at all the 12V ovens, microwaves, coffee pots, sandwich presses, etc. that they have... it'll give you ideas.

Have you used any of the 12 volt microwaves? How bad do they drain the batt. power? I can taste the popcorn now!

Did you try cummons(sp) Northwest for the 6.5 chevy?

Re: Hot Food While Fishing.
Ask anybody who has fished with me on a boat with an inboard.
Breakfast burritos are the way to go.
I like them with a little sweet itialian sausage, eggs, potatoes, onion, garlic, green and red peppers and cheese and salsa. I either make them the morning before I go or at camp the night before. Wrap them in wax paper then in aluminum foil. Place them on the intake and turn about 20 - 30 minutes, cook 25 to 20 more and enjoy .
Nice thing is that th ewax paper keeps your bait crusted hands from the goods .
Give it a try or take me fishing and I'll bring some. Haven't had anyone spit one out yet

Re: Hot Food While Fishing.
Sounds like someone needs to start a floating roach coach business , with some tackle thrown in.
Reminds me of a former co-worker's T-shirt: "Benny's Bait Shop and Sushi Bar - Yesterday's Bait is Today's Plate."
Wish I could find one of those shirts.

Re: Hot Food While Fishing.
I have a small stainless box mounted on my transon its a knife sterlizier from "KOCH SUPPLIES". I divert the water comming out of the kicker in to it. The only catch is your kicker must have a thermostat controlled system. I than buy a coulpe cans of ready to eat soup. Drop them in and in an hour or so hot soup. I also tip one of the burners on my heaters to point up and put a old style perk coffee pot on it. catch there is do not attempt this in rough water..

You give up space to have an I/O boat, but the engine cover has its uses. Favorite meal for me is breakfast at the sturgeon hole. The coleman stove and all the fixins fit on the engine cover and you can fish around the edges.

Re: Hot Food While Fishing.
A buddy I used to winter steelhead with a lot used to bring a hibachi, marinated elk or deer steaks and veggies wrapped in tin foil. For lunch we would drop anchor, put the bait divers out and barbecue steaks and veggies with the hibachi on the bow of the drift boat. We used to get passer by's offering us money for a steak. LOL

Re: Hot Food While Fishing.
If you're on a budget, or lacking space...bring along a thermos of the hottest water you can get and some cup 'o soups, or cup 'o noodles. If space isn't a problem...bring the camp stove and you can cook whatever you desire. We've gone from complete breakfasts to steaks and baked potatoes for dinner...even had Kraft Mac and Cheese too...the Thick 'N Creamy stuff tho.

Re: Hot Food While Fishing.
2 lbs. elk burger, 4 cans pork and beans. Fry burger in a pan on coleman stove, add beans and heat. You can eat it like a chili out of the bowl or wrap it up on a burrito. Its a gut bomb, but it sure warms you up on a cold day of goose hunting on the Yellowstone River.
Now my favorite meal that you can make on the water is fresh fish. Just fillet em' and toss em' in the pan with a little garlic and butter. Or if you have the webber portable they will grill nicely too. Ain't nuthin' finer.
Of course you gotta catch the little beggars first.

Re: Hot Food While Fishing.
I use a portable gas bbq in my drift boat. Ive cooked everything from hot dogs to salmon fillets and wild rice. The bbq sits nicely on the fly deck. I put a rubber pad down and set the bbq on it, This keeps it from slipping all over the place when you are moving.
Ive caught numerous fish while anchored up and cooking lunch. Bait divers in the rivers and tossing out a bobber and eggs while in the tide water. I have a new portable grill/ camp stove Im itching to try out this winter.

UMMM !!! nothing like sausage and hash browns and eggs on a cold morning.I've got a two burner propane stove and a gridle that covers both burners, enough for two. Then there's always beer dogs for lunch or maybe a hot cup of coffee, maybe.

Re: Hot Food While Fishing.
Hey, try this: Omelettes-in-a-bag.
Gotta be on calm water.
Take your usual egg combo for omelettes, 2 or 3 eggs per person, mix in a bowl, add chopped ham, onions, cooked bacon, cheese etc.
Pour into 1 quart Zip-lock FREEZER bags(those are the toughest) . Make sure they are upright and boil for 12-to-15 minutes in medium heat.
Dump onto plastic plate, chow down!
You won't believe how easy it is and how tasty these can be when ya got that need-to-nourish feelin'.

Re: Hot Food While Fishing.
Sounds like the local fishing holes are going to smell like a sunday BBQ from now on.
I am reminded of a time we got oysters at T-bay and cooked them on a magna rail mount(sp) BBQ with melted butter mixed with lemmon pepper and ate them between tending the crab pots and fishing for what ever bit off the jetty rocks with trout gear.
There is no end to the creativity of a bunch of hungry guys with fish on the brain! I now feel I can break the chains of, sorry Jen, almond joys and beef j e r k y.
Keep the fixen ideas comen'!

Re: Hot Food While Fishing.
for a convienent cooker for the smaller boat I came across a site this morning. gasgrillcenter.com Hit the link to outdoors. It is a single burner with the fuel source in a can enclosed into a single unit. 29.95 and this can be yours. Fuel cans are just under 3.00 each sold in quanities of 12. I don't have one or have ever tried one so I cannot give you a opinion on how well it works. Thought someone might be interested though.

I use a single burner butane stove to cook anything. It's perfect for a smaller boat. I use it on top of my cooler. It doesn't get hot at all. It cooks great! Grilled ham & cheese sands. rule!

Pretty simple, I just fill up a wide mouth thermos with Hot Dinty Moores, Chili, you pick it. I do this whether I am fishing, hunting or riding dirt bikes. It always takes the edge off and keeps it simple.

Re: Hot Food While Fishing.
I see the Fisherman's has the Magma Stainless Steel boat bar-b-ques on sale through Christmas.
I myself just go with the small gas bar-b-que unit that sells for less than $15.00 on sale. It uses the little green cans of propane. It's identical to the Weber unit that cost's about $50+. This baby has cooked up more fish, steak, dogs and burgers than I care to imagine. It doesn't get hot enough to make pancakes, although the thing is so clogged with drippings....
Maybe I should clean that thing up a bit.

Re: Hot Food While Fishing.
I recall a cold sping morning on the Cowlitz and the smell of bacon cooking in the back of my first sled. We waited until about 10 AM to start breakfast and four boats within 25 yards left for the docks. We had the hole to ourselves for a while. A single burner propane back pack stove works well. WHY NOT STRAP DOWN THE FAMILY GRILL IN THE UNUSED PART OF THE BOAT AND DRIVE EVERYONE CRAZY? It's worth the effort.

Re: Hot Food While Fishing.
For sometime now I have been cooking meals on my Coleman two burner and it works out great. I like to fix Ham & eggs & hashbrowns on the water around 9 or 10 am after starting an early morning fishing trip. I also have a small refer plugged into 12V dc and that keeps every thing fresh and cold for a long time.I cook a lot of different stuff including my dinner on board when I stay late.I mainly run the refer only when I am under way so my battery stays up real good. Imagination works well, so have had some fine chow and hot fresh coffee when needed.

Not quite from the boat but.... My wife makes authentic tamales around christmas time and since I live right on the Sandy I occasionally bring fresh hot tamales and homeade salsa to friends on the river.

Re: Hot Food While Fishing.
All this talk about food makes me hungry. What do you pack for a whole day? Us bank fisherpersons sometimes walk-in to a hole and end up fishing in the spot all day. In that case do you build a fire or bring a back packers stove? Do you pre-cook or do you do your cooking there on the river? Just some questions?
Thanks for any info!

Ryan,
I do alott of backpack hunting and those sound like they would be a great aternative to packing in a small stove for short weekend trips and the usual freeze dried yuck stuff. I've never heard of MRE's could you please tell what the initials stand for and where I can get some of them, thanks.

Artwo,
MRE stands for Meal Ready to Eat. They what the military is served when in the field. You can buy them at camping stores or Sometimes at Surplus Centers. They get them just before they expire. Though I don't know that they can really expire. Just make sure to avoid "escalloped potatos and ham" and anything with tuna.

Re: Hot Food While Fishing.
Hey Ryan:
You are very likley to import a little giardia with your river water. The heat from the chemical cooker is not hot enough for long enough. Kinda like playing russian roulette. Good luck.

Re: Hot Food While Fishing.
MRE (meals ready to eat) you can buy them at andy and bax or most outdoors stores like that a lot of army surplus stores have them and if you realy want to save and have a good selection go online i alway buy mine online. The ones that come in the ones in the box are the best it is a thin brown box and they say comes with heater that is the metal plate you heatthem up with. Im going out fishing tonight on the sandy and i am taking chicken and salsa for dinner. yum
