Re: Bull Riding
Way back in my younger days I had the same desire. I had done the Broncs, even did the wild horse race. Then I decided I wanted to try the bulls.
Well, I have to say that I did try it once. I then had an epiphony. I realized that the horse really just wanted you off his back. The bulls, I realized, just wanted you off his back, so he can kill you.
I never tried it again. Decided to stick with the horses and jumping out of air planes in order to get my adrenaline rushes.
Good luck!

Re: Bull Riding
As a kid going to county rodeos I was a Bull Rider. It was fun and I never got hurt but was never any good.

Re: Bull Riding
I don't know of anybody up there, a friend of mine has amature ranked bulls down here in SE Texas that get ridden. I wouldn't get into it if you have a job, wife and kids. It can put you down for a long time. If you can't stand it and you need to try, you should probably get away from the west side of the state and look more towards central, or eastern Oregon.
better to stick with fishing and hunting!!!!!!

Re: Bull Riding
there used to be a bull riding school out of Eugene but that was 20-30 years ago and i believe it was the Richardson stock company. If you aren't just hyped from watching it on tv look for a bull riding school and learn it right. All i can tell you broken ribs, knocked out cold, torn groin, sprained wrist, etc etc. I wasn't good either. injuries and DEATH occur. TC is right it is not for the family man and you can ask my ex-wives about that.

Re: Bull Riding
Quote from a movie: 1).fill your mouth with marbles.
2). spit out one marble every time you get on a bull
3). whne you have lost all your marbles...you're a bull rider!

Re: Bull Riding
Call around to some of the livestock places and ask about green bulls. Most of the time they'll let you buck 2 or 3 in a day, that should get you your fill. In my younger days we would ride 10 bulls 2-3 days/week for practice and then hit the weekend rides. It seems I could always make enough prize money to cover entry fees and fuel, but seldom any extra.

Re: Bull Riding
Rode in high school and after serving in the Air force tried the semi pro circuit ...After one real bad ride , I thought to myself in the hospital bed ... Do you think it would be fun to go through life as a cripple ?
Don't take this lightly , you can get messed up pretty good when you know what your doing ...
I don't want to sound mean but you pretty much sound like a greenhorn to Me ...

Re: Bull Riding
I did rodeo in high school. Bareback and saddle bronc. Watched a couple friends get stomped pretty good by bulls Thought to myself...."self, you ain't that stupid!" I wrecked my body doing other stupid things, motorcycles, skiing, football.
I'm now in my 50's with 70 year old knees and a 80 year old back. I'd do it all over again, too. Still wouldn't ride a bull........

Re: Bull Riding
A kid in my Church broke his neck riding (or should I say "failing to ride?") a bull. Fortunately he was not paralyzed...but came close. I grew up on a cattle ranch. I knew I was not cut out to be a bull rider, when my friends and I couldn't even stay on top of a steer.

Re: Bull Riding
I rode bulls in high school and my late teens. Mostly just did high school events and some jackpot stuff. Don't let these other guys kid you. My traveling partner rode bareback and after several years, his shoulder would pop out of the socket every time that he sneezed. I rode bareback once and realized that horses jump much higher than bulls...that's why I only did it once.
If you want really get into it, go to a school. Many of the stock contractors for the local rodeos have schools and also practice facilities at their disposal. I used to practice at a guy's ranch down in Sunny Valley, and I think that he only charged $10.00 per head.
If you love adrenaline and pain, don't have a family, and don't mind having to return bottles and cans to pay for gas, bull riding just might be the sport for you.

Re: Bull Riding
If you really have to try it (and I understand if you do) follow Woodguy's advice and go to a school. Learning the right way may keep you out of some wrecks. Just remember, if you get on enough bulls you are going to get hurt. It's not a matter of when, it's a matter of how bad. When it goes right it's the biggest high in the world but when it goes bad it can be a nightmare. Even when you cover one you still have to get off and if you happen to fall close to the bull and those hind hooves come slamming down.....

Re: Bull Riding
I once knew a guy that had the same desire. He tried it for the first time. The next thing he was learning was pushing a wheel chair with his chin.

Re: Bull Riding
Never thought sports that all started with "betcha chew can that you can't"...were reallly that smart.
It is the ultimate in macho, but have you seen Tiger Woods' wife. Bet he never ends up in the ER with a hoof print on his face.
