Default Yotes tomorrow

The weather forecaster is calling for morning temps somewhere between negative 5 and 0. The dogs should be hungry. I just put together an el cheapo caller and got the iPod loaded up with a bunch of different sounds. Looking forward to some action in the morning, if I don't freeze.

The thermoneter said -4 when I got up this morning. I was hunting some BLM land close to Bend. I hiked about 2 miles roundtrip and made two sets. The first set brought in four yotes. They were coming on the run, but not straight in. They came in at a 45 to the wind and caught my scent at about 100yrds. The were running through sage and thick juniper and I couldn't quite get a shot off. I sat there another 20 minutes and then moved about a half mile. The second set brought in nothing for a very cold 25 minutes.
When I got back to the truck I heard a coyote yelping much like the hurt pup sound, only way more vivid. There was also what sounded like what I can only describe as a racoon or cat snarling at the same time. This sounded like it was coming from about 150-200yrds away. I raced up the hill a little ways and then slowly made my way to where the sound was coming from but it stopped. I hiked around for about 15 minutes and found tons of yote tracks but that was it. Not sure what was happening, but it sounded like a fight of some sort and a coyote/dog was losing.

Well some action is better than no action. Caller seemed to work though huh?
Hope to see pics from a successful repeat.

Those critters havent survived as well as they have for no reason. Smart as can be. I was Elk hunting and a few were running down a tree line of a pasture I was in. (I was on the high ground) I wasnt going to shoot them as I was "busy" Elk hunting a busy trail, but I did put my crosshairs on the lead yote. As soon as I did it he hit the brakes. I know he didn't see me (he never looked my direction nor did he smell me (Wind wasn't right) Its just like they knew something was amiss , anyway they all ran like he11 back up the hill and into the woods.

You'll get em next time!!!

Not to detour your thread, but that's exactly why I never use my 17 HMR as a coyote rifle.

Congrats, BTW, on calling up four at one set. I thought Rusty was the only one who could do that.

What Skein doesn't tell you is the fact that out of the four I called in, only Skein made a successful shot. Over 100 yards on the run, going uphill...bang flop! I, on the other hand, threw lead in copious amounts to absolutely no avail. Hmmm!

Keep after them, one day we'll both score!

Man, I have been striking zero lately, but today I changed my luck a little, finally called one in, I didn't know it. Walked over to pick up the Foxpro and dang coyote is standing in a spur road that I should have been watching instead of the stupid clearcut!!!!!! I did get two shots off, but I wasn't up to the 160 yard off hand shots.

Later I got a couple all riled up with a female invitation call, but they would not come in. Should a person move in on the dogs in a situation like this??? I was up high, they were down over a knob in front of me, probably on a road down below. I could have moved at them and then howled again, would the female think I was challenging for the male and come to kick my butt???

Hey not to steal your thread, but how'd you make your "el cheapo" call?

Check out varmint Als page. It has plans for one and there is plans all over the internet. That was my plan until I saw what RP did. What I ended up doing was basically the exact same thing that RP did. He posted pics on here. It got a case creek speaker with built in amp and 75' of cord for $32 at joes (I get a 20% discount). I got a waterproof fly box for $6 for the ipod and thats it. There are sounds all over the internet.
