Default Lewis River: A Chance to Get Involved!

This was originally posted by Todd on PP. I wanted to bring it here too because I know there are a lot of people on this board and from Oregon that fish the East Fork Lewis. It has been awsome seeing the salmon runs starting to return to this river over the last few years. After all the hard work that groups like Friends of the East Fork and Fish First have put into restoring this beautiful river it would be a shame to see all their hard work wiped out by more mining.

FORUM/KEY BRIEFING ANNOUNCEMENT

EAST FORK LEWIS RIVER

"An Exceptional River in Crisis"

A forum will be held February 25th, 7 PM, at the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St., Vancouver, WA, 6th floor hearing room.

A panel of presenters Gary Loomis, President of Fish First, and Dick Dyrland, President of Friends of the East Fork, along with experts with fisheries, geology, hydrology and conservation will present a program addressing the issues regarding gravel mining in the East Fork Lewis River.

Despite having recently been granted an expansion on the nearby upland Tebo pit, the J.L. Storedahl gravel mining company, has submitted a habitat conservation plan to state and federal officials in order to re-activate and expand their mining across the channel migration zone in the East Fork.

Four species of salmon spawn and rear in the area and many experts are concerned that any re-activation of mining will destroy the remaining fish population as well as cause flooding, erosion, ground water depletion, lethal temperature changes, and contamination. All concerned citizens, conservation associations, fishing groups, and recreationalists are encouraged to attend and learn about how to help preserve and enhance the East Fork, one of the last un-dammed rivers in the Northwest. The moderator will be Steve Stuart, Executive Director, Friends of Clark County.
