They make it sound as though this is something new. Before the most of us can remember, that is WWII ending the US brought out all their purse seiners to get the coveted then, Yellowfin and Skipjack. It used to be down in San Diego, etc. their bait boat trips were up to several months away from home. A big boat held 100 tons. They fish out the tuna close to home. By the 70's the purse seiners had a capacity of over 750 tons and were traveling all the way to Africa to fish, yes Africa. They created quotas for Yellowfin, PO'd South American countries by fishing in their waters w/o purchasing permits to fish. Those countries used old US gun boats we gave them to corral and hold some purse seiners.
This is really old news that some commercial fisheries are ****** the resource.
