Re: bin Laden Al Qaeda Relief Fund
heard a great suggestion the other day.
Killing Bin Laden will only create a martyr. Holding him prisoner will inspire his comrades to take hostages to demand his release.
Therefore, let the Special Forces, Seals or whatever covertly capture him, fly him to an undisclosed hospital and have surgeons quickly perform a complete sex change operation.
Then we return her to Afghanistan -- to live as a woman under the Taliban.
Justice served.

Re: bin Laden Al Qaeda Relief Fund
Vinny, I know I've told you I don't usually read threads that are non-fishing related, but has anyone ever ever mentioned to you that this is a Pacific Northwest fishing board?
I would really like to pull up Ifish.net and look at a page of fishing topics. That's why I come here. Kind of a nice place to escape from the OTHER things going on in our lives.
Wouldn't you agree?

Johnny Mac - Yes, what an ironic justice that would be.
Hamachi - I apologize if I've offended you. Yes, this is a fishing board. The thread was just a current events game of "Where in the World is Carmen Santiago?" and "you can run but you can't hide."
Fishing has been slow in these parts, warm water, low water. Just been waiting for this much needed rain. How's the bite on the west side?

Sorry guys, but Hamachi is right. This is a fishing web page. Don't blame Hamachi for a simple reminder. There are plenty of other sites to discuss world events.
Thanks for your cooperation,

Re: bin Laden Al Qaeda Relief Fund
I kind of agree that we should open the ones we want and not open the ones we don't want. This board is not just about fishing but is about sportsmen and women. I have gotten good info about hunting about dogs about boats boat repairs and safety off this board. So lets not just call is a fishing board. Its a place where sports men and women can meet and talk about most anything as long as we keep a civil tongue. Practice open and not open if you feel that you do not like the topoics.

Re: bin Laden Al Qaeda Relief Fund
I have to agree with Dan about the open/don't open option. I thought this was supposed to be a community of fisherperson. In any community setting you would typically talk about the things affecting your lives.
I kinda think this qualifies. I agree that most of this should be fishing/hunting related on the appropriate board but an occasional off topic should not be censured.
I belong to a list serve that is work related and we have members from around the world. Two days after the attack a member from France commented that we should not talk about these events as they were off topic and not relevant to what we do. As well as being offended which several of us commented about, one member from DC responded that she had to wait several hours to find out if her husband and several friends had survived the attack on the Pentagon where they worked. Just because it may not seem relevant to you does not mean it is not to someone else.
Hookset, do you mean to tell us there should be no more happy birthdays, get wells or any other basic human contact posts? Again, I believe that as a community getting to know one another we should reach out in those ways. If all this is for is to post a fishing report or latest techinque then it really isn't a community at all.

Re: bin Laden Al Qaeda Relief Fund
When I checked, this wasn't a debatable issue. Jennie started a FISHING site and expanded it with some other forums. Since she foots the bills and provides all the technical support, it seems like some consideration from the users would be appropriate. The "don't read it" idea would be great if there were unlimited band width and disk space on the server, but there isn't. The "boys in the boat" idea would be great if it was your boat. It isn't. It's someone else's boat and we are welcomed aboard as long as we don't sink it with excess baggage.

Re: bin Laden Al Qaeda Relief Fund
Pete,
I see your point about limited disk space, bandwidth, etc.. I was just "following suit" with similiar threads in the past. This one was meant to be a current events "Where in the World is Carmen Santiago?"
I enjoy the vaired topics on this board. The opinions of our members help define our unique personalies both as individuals and as a group.
Recently, we've defined ourselves in terms of union affiliation, (or non union), employment at McD's (I've yet to read that one), flyfishers, drift fishers (Flotilla), and geographics, just to name a few.
In the (primarily) non-visual world of the internet, we define ourselves with our words. It enables us to know eachother on a slightly less superficial level.
Non-fishing threads can help someone to decide who's possibly a compatible individual to invite on next week's (or weekend's) fishing trip.
I'm obviously in favor of non-fishing threads being allowed. However, it is Jennie's board and I will respect her decision.
I'll be forwarding this comment to her.

Re: bin Laden Al Qaeda Relief Fund
Rich, Vinny and Dan, Certainly I understand your points of view. We are a community of fisherpeople who's lives involve more then just fishing. And as such, we discuss a wide range of topics. Many of these off fishing subjects show up on IFish each day. We understand that and very seldom edit or comment about these threads. That doesn't make it right, since this is a fishing related board. Every once in awhile, when the off-fishing content is high, you'll read a reminder to keep the content fishing related. My only objection on this thread is.....when a member (Hamachi) post a reminder about the boards purpose and intent, people should be understanding, not critical. I'd like to acknowledge Hamachi in a positive manner by saying thank you.
My number one issue on IFish is people offending other people. It's not the thread content or topic, it's about people. If everyone could just stick to the facts, issues, board rules and not attact individuals personally, this site would be so much better. Over the years, a number of good people have left Ifish because they were personally criticized and singled out because of their views when people choose to disagree instead of sticking to the issue/s. I find this very short sighted and object to this behavior.
Nice post Pete, thank you.
Please everyone, let's all try and be a little more understanding and patient. Thanks for your support and sorry about the rant, this is NOT just about this thread.
Gregg

Re: bin Laden Al Qaeda Relief Fund
You think this whole thing won't have an effect on fisherman if it continues to escalate??
The coast guard has already made announcements that they don't have the manpower to do the safety inspections or rescues like they did before because they're too busy patrolling the coastal waters for terrorists.
There was never any battles fought here during WWII. Do you think it didn't effect the people in the small towns on the coast. I had a lot of family living and fishing in the Westport area. My grandpa's boat went down on the bar and he had to wait forever to get permission to use the wood for a new boat. His dad had a cannery that nearly shut down due to the fact that all the materials were going for the war effort. Not to mention all the town's crawling with soldiers doing coastal patrols and training.
I'm not saying this will happen again but you never know. It just might.
To say this isn't or won't effect fishing is ludicrous. This is effecting everything. I may be getting layed off in the next week or two because of this and it will definitely cut into my fishing funds big time. Heck it will cut into my cable internet funds as well.
Besides how many other non fishing topics are on here on a daily basis. The union, non-union, the McDonalds thread, Jen and her Marfan syndrome. They're all very important to us or they wouldn't be here. All of these look like they're off topic but they're our lives and have alot to do with how we fish and when we fish.

Re: bin Laden Al Qaeda Relief Fund
Catch and Eat, You'll never know how much I/we have to bend. In fact, sometimes I feel bent to the point of breaking. Sure, in my post I got carried away. Just old feelings revisited. I wish some old members would come back and post again. Actually, for the record, I do NOT have a problem with most of the non-fishing related topics, just some of the people interaction. This thread probably was not the appropriate place for my comments.
Good discussion, not an argument, thanks,
Gregg

Boy, boys BOYS!
Let's not argue, k, or I'll send you to your rooms!?
The whole point is that a couple off topic relateds are fine... But try to keep it to a minimum.
Just know that this is MOSTLY a fishing board, and I do respect that you all try and keep it that way.
Of course, there are important side issues to be thrown in, and some really fun ones!
Most of us talk fishing most of the time, and that is the point of ifish.net!
So far, so good!
It's no big deal! War is a big deal! Anthrax is a big deal! Our soldiers at war is a big deal!
This fishing board is not a big deal!!!
Let's just have fun, k?

Re: bin Laden Al Qaeda Relief Fund
It is obvious to me that some of us have bought underwear a few sizes to small today. They seem to be bunching up a little on the opinion side. Lighten up folks! This is suppose to be a fun board and I would swear that you guys we a bunch of school yard babies.
Yeah, this is a fishin board but it is also a place that we can brag, vent, and share important information. It is certainly ok to voice opinions and get a little hot under the colar but lets keep things in perspective. Follow the rules, sure. Rules are made to be changed a little from time to time.
Vinny, ya did fine ol'e boy. Gregg, bend just a little on this one. Jennie, thanks for allowing a little jockularity on the board.

Thank you Jennie for clarifying a very reasonable compromise and effort to accommodate a few community type non-fishing specific threads. The rest of us should reciprocate by keeping them to a minimum; so as to keep this site community balanced, fun, and yet mostly site subject related.

Re: bin Laden Al Qaeda Relief Fund
Jen,
Thanks. You're the greatest.
I like what Dan! had to say about this. I look at the board the way I look at a paper or shop at the store. I don't want or need everything there or here for that matter. If we had to go to a different store for everything on our list it wouldn't be any fun at all.
FREEDOM, Isn't that what this country is all about? Can we stop bickering among ourselves and just relax? It's just fishing after all and last time I checked Jen was paying the bills. If she is alright with it let it be.
RT was right about the self moderation.
There is enough stress in the world without dishing it out here. Lets go fishing or hunting or volunteer time or donate blood or enjoy our evening surfing the net, including our favorite site right here.
We should all be grateful that we have the freedom to make such statements and that Jen has the freedom and the time and the compashion to make this resource available for us all to share.
If ya want to contribute to a fund donate money for this site. Buy a sticker at least.
Thanks again Jen
I will now step off my soap box and do something nice for someone.
Ready, set, The first captain of a Sea Ray with a name that rhyms with Pea Swine with a dog named Kale that smells like Hayle that emails me will get a free box of 2 3/4 12 gauge 4 shot Federal Steel shot shotgun shells......
