Rear depth gauge
I finally got my sled a month ago and have been fishing every weekend. I have a DF/GPS on the dash and a tiller trolling motor. I dont like the fact that I cant see my screen when trolling. I was thinking of getting a seperate depth gage in the back to verify depth. What do you guys do who have this problem?

Re: Rear depth gauge
I have dual Raytheons. One on the dash and one on the stern. I do have problems when trying to run both at the same time. I have to turn one or the other off or I get "echo bounce" betweeen the two units. Otherwise it works great.

Re: Rear depth gauge
Yeah, make sure if you run two units, that they are running on different frequencies, or you'll get the echo problem. Just figure out which one you want to see better target resolution on, and install them that way.

Re: Rear depth gauge
I know this is a stupid idea....but couldn't you rig up a "T" connection somehow...and just move your front unit to a rear postion plug-in??
If there's any depth finder manufaturer folks reading this... I've got some good practical suggestions for them!!

Re: Rear depth gauge
I've always wanted something that tells me what's 20 feet in front of my boat, instead of how deep the rock I just hit is. Oh, well. Satelite technology will get there soon enough I suppose.

Re: Rear depth gauge
fishlipz,
I run a Furuno up front that handles the deep-water duty and general navigation tasks. In back I run a Lowrance tri-beam that works great for trolling and anchoring in shallower water. The rear unit gets the majority of the use and is well worth the investment.

Re: Rear depth gauge
I'm pretty sure Lowrance makes a "Y" cable, that enables you to run two DF units off of one tranducer, you'd need to get in touch with a really knowledgeble Lowrance dealer and ask them about it.
West Marine sells a forward-looking DF, it's not cheap, though, I think it runs $1,500 to $2,000. They are out there, though, and will eventually come down in price.

Re: Rear depth gauge
I also run a df at the back of the boat. I rigged mine up so that i could put it in any of the pole holder mounts that way it can be moved around if needed. I have it wired with a long power and trans. cords that are taped together that way i can route the cord out of the way or if not in use then it can be stowed in the lock box and is always hooked up and ready to go.
