Re: Albino Rosevelt
There is a cow elk that looks just like that in the herd on the Port of Tillamook land (out behind the blimp hanger). I have seen it twice and will try to get a picture of it.

Sorry to break your bubble but that's not an albino. Very light colored and that's about it. Have seen several that look similar.

Re: Albino Rosevelt
I shot a four-point bull in Saddle Mt. around '97 that had half a white face, split directly down the nose line. It was a rag horn bull and although it would have been cool to mount, I ended up having the hide tanned and the end result was that it was a poor tan job and the hair slipped. All I have now is a few pictures (pre-digital). If I knew how to scan them, I could try to show them off as it was pretty cool. The snow white hair was only on the face and only on one side at that.

Blonde spike wow! I'm amazed at that.
As an aside I think I saw Snowball two weeks ago at about 9PM or her sister and out near Molalla.

Those would be cool to see. If you like, I'll PM you my address, you can mail the pictures to me, I'll scan them, mail the originals back to you and e-mail the scanned ones to you or post them for you. Don

Re: Albino Rosevelt
That's a great idea Don...........now that means I have to dig through the moving boxes and find the photos. I got your PM and I will look for the pictures. I didn't want to take away from the thread with my own story since that blonde elk is pretty cool but it was a reminder of the elk I got and the only one I have ever seen.
Again, cool looking bull.

Re: Albino Rosevelt
There was albino elk out at the refuge in Jewel for a few years I think she died of natural causes although she had been shot once with a rifle and once with arrow I think was the story.

Thats ok , if you read more than just the title you would realize that I know it is not a true albino. I have taken coons and Canada geese that are the same color but I do not know what it is realy called, that is why I bothered to say "maby not an albino, but not your normal colored elk" I changed the title so that it won't mislead anyone else.

Re: Archery bull
I love Blondes... That is a unique elk none-the-less. I would probably pass on a bigger elk to get a shot at a light phase. Its not something you see very often.
Congrats on a rare trophy.

Re: Archery bull
Love the traditional bow. I bought a Wes Wallace recurve a few years ago. I can't wait to get my first elk with it.
Way to go, nice elk.

Re: Archery bull
Alright here is the short version-
Wed been seeing "blondie" and a few others like him for the last few years in the area we hunt. About a week before I got him I passed up a fifteen yarder at him for a chance at a five point, and I ended up missing.
The same five point that I had missed the week before was back out bugling in the same spot at day light the next Wed. Due to swirly winds and warm quiet weather we had to just watch and plan on coming back for the evening hunt. Elk were bedded all around the edges of the little clear cut with the bull plopped down right in the middle surprising enough (no, there was no chance for a stalk believe me I tried every angle.) Anyways we knew they were not going any where as long as know one bothered them. We backed out and headed to camp.
At about 3pm we made our way back down to our "spottin stump" and assesed the situation. There was no elk to be seen or heard. Knowing the area really well and the elk, I knew they were not far. We decided that our best option was to take stands on the knoll where the elk had spent their morning and wait. This is not dad and I's favorite form of hunting in fact we hate it, but it was the only option.
As we stood up from our spottin stump and I heard a stick pop behind me and down the hill. Turns out about a quarter of the herd including blondie were already coming out behind us. Long story short I tried intercepting blondie and a couple other spikes but got winded. The good thing was they ran away from where the other part of the herd had bedded and did not affect them. So we proceeded to our stand anyway.
After an hour of sitting and hearing nothing my dad started getting impatient. He finally couldn't take it anymore and decided to go back up to the spottin stump and watch from a higher vantage point. He didnt make it 100 yards from me and the first bugle woke me up. Commited to where he was going dad continued to the stump. Before I knew it I was in Yellowstone Park. I could hear elk all around me and the five point off to my left. Twenty minutes later I had the five point, a couple sats, and about ten cows fifty yards in front of me. He was chasing them every which way except right in front of me. But I knew from watching them in this spot numerous times that if I waited long enough he would come by. Calling was not an option at this point due to lack of cover.
I slowly crawled until I couldn't anymore without being seen and prepared to shoot. His white horn tips crested the hill right in front of me a couple times at about forty yards but I could never see his body. I could hear elk behind me now as all of the sudden the five point disapeared into the timber. Everything quieted down for about a minute until I heard elk running right towards me, then a bugle. I nervously turned and looked and here he came chasing three cows and a spike right at me. Tensing my string, the cows and spike walked by broadside at fifteen yards. I let them walk by as the five point began to step into my shooting lane at twenty yards. As he walked behind a stump I drew and held. Like an idiot as soon as hair was visible in the chest "area" I let go and shot under him. There was no spot picking involved. He jumped and trotted to forty yards and turned broadside. This time I took my time but it was a couple yards to far and the arrow went right under his armpit.
After he and the other elk ran the woods were quiet. Then out of no where here comes blondie down the same route as the other right in front of me. Watching in his binoculars from the stump my dad cow called and stopped him at twenty five yards broadside. I drew, held, held, actually concentrated and my arrow hit him hard a little high but good enough. The rest is history.
Every year I learn the same lesson, pick a spot.
