Default Chinook Salmon at Tillamook Bay

For those planning to try their luck at catch King/Chinook Salmon in Tillamook Bay this weekend, I thought I'd post that we were able to catch a 30 pound female Chinook last Friday at 12:15pm. We were trolling in the area of the floating bathrooms using herring on #4 hooks at about 5 to 10 feet deep. Trolling speed was about 2 mph. We saw a couple other boats hooking up during the morning. There were others trolling with herring, as well as other spinners. By early afternoon, it appeared most anglers started heading home..

Crabs were fairly plentyful at the minimum size and they were heavy with meat. We pulled in 10 for the day.

The weather was great with blue skies and light winds...

Good luck to all those going out fishing this weekend.

You could probably try it Jeremy but think about this ........

On the Columbia bar the area you bank fish is closed to boat anglers. The water is much bigger as well. At Tillamook and Nehalem the area is small and crowded with boats right up to the jetty. This is especially true at Tillamook's North jetty. If the bar is closed they pack in right along the rocks.

Not a very friendly environment for a banker.

BTW I have seen a few hardy souls fish the South jetty from the rocks but realize that a very long hike is involved. About 6 miles, I believe. Wear felt soled boots on the rocks because they are very slippery when wet.

If you try this let us know how it goes and be careful of the large breakers that develop near the jetty tips. They can knock you right into the water.

The Thursday bite was scattered at best. There were a few fish caught outside, but decent swells and building breeze meant the ocean demanded attention for those who ventured out. The highest concentration of boats were between the jetties. There was also consistent action at the Ghost Hole until the wind started blasting in the early afternoon. Don't know what was going on in the upper bay, but the number of boats suggests there were fish being caught there, too. The crowds are building, plan accordingly!

I will be fishing the upper bay(oyster house etc..) Ifish sticker on the windshield Stilletto on the side. Will be looking for other Ifish members. Monitoring ch 12 on the CB 16 on VHF. Give me a shout and if you get into the fish and I'll do the same. Lipripper, out.
