Wildlife Conservation Programs to Receive Federal Funding
January 10, 2008 (National)
The U.S. Senate has approved a version of the 2007 Farm Bill, which will provide funding for important conservation programs that benefit sportsmen and wildlife.
On Dec. 14, the Senate passed its version of the Farm Bill by a vote of 79 to 14. The measure contains key elements of the House-approved legislation, which are critical to improving wildlife habitat and hunting opportunities. This includes programs like the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), and the Wetlands Reserve Program.
Major conservation provisions in the bill include reauthorization of CRP, the Open Fields provision, and the inclusion of a new Wildlife Habitat Program from Ranking Member, Sen. Saxby Chambliss.
The Conservation Reserve Program helps farmers and ranchers protect valuable wildlife habitat and enhance forest and wetland resources. It promotes the conservation of vegetative cover, wildlife plantings, and riparian buffers. Similarly, the Wetlands Reserve Program helps landowners with wetland restoration efforts. It offers opportunities to establish long-term conservation and wildlife practices and protection.
The Open Fields provision, championed by House Agriculture Committee Chairman CollinPeterson, would fund the expansion of state programs aimed at encouraging landowners to increase public hunting and fishing access on their private lands. It advocates the management of those private lands to maximize their value for recreation and wildlife.
As the two houses work out the differences in the versions, conservation groups continue to work toward a final bill that strongly supports the conservation efforts currently included.
