The fish in Detroit aren\'t done eating yet!
I fished Detroit again today, 11 to 1, and it was incredible. Very hungry trout down on the bottom. Very hungry kokanee near the surface. Powerbait on the bottom is good right now for 9-11 inch trout. If you go five minutes without a strike, it means the bait was stolen on the way down. Seriously. Kokanee were hitting a silver Dick Nite spoon cast out and retrieved slowly, with a 1/2 oz. crescent sinker to be able to get it out there. The kokanee were running about 8 inches, with depths anywhere from 5 to 30 feet. The larger kokanee are getting ready to spawn. I didn't see any where I was, near the log boom. It's a good time to be out there. The weather is good, the water is cool, and the fish are hungry.

Right now it is a tossup between taking him out there this weekend or possibly throwing tackle in Washington. The Washington trip is closer, but I'd need to buy yet another daily license...Tommy may just win this one and go fishing with Papa.

Re: The fish in Detroit aren\'t done eating yet!
Do you know if anything other than a beer can can be launched from Mongold? I know you're fishing from the dam/bank but did you see any boats? I was there in July and the fishing was great but the launch and take out was very difficult. I promised a fishing trip to some of "my kids" so any info is appreciated. I didn't see any boats. I didn't go up to the boat ramp to take a look. My boat is an inflateable, and I can pretty much launch from anywhere, so I don't pay too much attention to the boat ramps. The lake is much lower than it was in July, though. I'm sure you could call one of the tackle shops in Detroit, and they could tell you.
Come to think of it, when I drove past the town of Detroit last month, the upper lake looked like it was basically gone. The boat ramp at Mongold may be high and dry by now.
Big Cliff Reservoir, below Detroit, is full though. That could change, though. It's a re-regulation reservoir and is subject to rapid and extreme fluctuations in the water level, which can really kill the bite, or make it hard to find the fish. I've seen it rise or fall as much as 8 feet while I've fished it. It does have a useable boat ramp, though, and a lot of trout as well. The bite at Big Cliff isn't as predictable as it is at Detroit, though. It's best to go in the evenings there, from my experience.

Scrod- yes, you can launch at Mongold if you have a small boat. I was talking to the lady at Santiam Sports Center in Mill City this morning, and she said they did some work to lengthen the boat ramp, and you can launch a small boat there. I did see a boat out there this morning.

Hey, what color(s) of PowerBait are you throwing at those `bows? I'll be taking my son up there Saturday and need to make sure I've got all the right colors for the upcoming season.
I feel so...trendy.

I was using orange, but pink and chartreuse also work well. I usually put a drop of shrimp Smelly Jelly on it as well. Today, my daugher and I were picking up some trout, and a lot of kokanee on triple teasers.
