Default Fisher Poet Festival in Astoria

Anyone ever been to one of these? I see their website lists an 24th-25th of Febuary as the weekend for this year but nothing else is listed as far as times, places etc.

Is lodging in Astoria hard to get duing this event? Did you enjoy the music, poems and art did you like it well enough to return?

I've never been and I'm thinking of going.

any information would be very helpful.

thanks,

cully

I went to one when I was living out there. It was OK. There was more of the poet than the fisher. I enjoyed the music. It was a local group called Brownsmead Flats. Overall it was kind of a cool cultural thing.. Don't go expecting to be blown away by all the talent.

Fisher Poets is one of the highlights of my winters, and I have attended the last 4 years. The poets and storytellers are commercial fishermen, and they are the real thing. The stories, music and poems are raw, gritty and authentic. You won't see perfect grammar or polished presentations, but you will hear how it really it at sea.

About 30% of the presenters are women, and I especially enjoy their stories of what it is like to be, for example, a female boat captain in the Bering Sea.

If you like "The Deadliest Catch" on the cable channel, you will probably like Fisher Poets. You'll hear about hard times and hard drinking, epic storms and epic days.

The event takes place in a couple of venues on the same block and you can freely go from one to the other throughout the evening.

Cully, their website
http://www.clatsopcollege.com/fisherpoets/
lists the dates as Feb 22 -24.

I haven't been, but when I've heard about it, I've thoought it would be interesting.
