Default Would an OU or OSU fan know a football player......

I was wondering last week when I logged on for my nightly IFish fix and saw the poll re the BCS Championship Game. I was rather early in the poll, but it was pretty well in favor of Ohio State. How could that be? The poll did even out closer to game time as obviously more knowledgable fans made their thoughts known.

It got me to wondering, how could so many Oregonian's be so off on the poll. After pondering the issue for a few days, I was left with the question I started the thread off with;

Would an Oregon University or Oregon State University fan know a Division I, Southeast Conference Football player if they were sitting next to one on a bus?

Since I have lived here in Idaho and have come to know a few Duck fans. I recall the annual build up of near hysterical proportions, only to have their hopes dashed each year. Dashed, by some unlikely or unfortunate event on the field. Last year when the unfortunate event seemed to strike Oklahoma University and the PAC 10 officials were able to give Oregon U a game. It still did not work out for Oregon in the long run.

Having grown up in the south, let me tell you from experience they are a whole different caliber of player than you are use to seeing. That is not to say a few of the Alums from OU and OSU do not find an occassional job on Sunday. The SEC and Southern schools are just bigger and faster.

So the next time you see a poll and there is a SEC or southern school, pick them. Even if they are playing your team. If your team is not playing a SEC or southern team, then by all means knock yourself and vote for the home team.

I guess I don't understand the question .

I would most likely not recognize an NFL player (let alone a collegiate player) on a bus, but then again I don't spend a ton of time on buses.

If your question is can the NW teams compete with your Southern teams, then the answer is yes.

I am a Beaver fan, however have no doubt in my mind that if U of O would have stayed healthy they would have given LSU or Ohio State a run for the national championship.

OK Duckwheat, I will rise to the bait.

If you analyze the final results based on 71 computer rankings (Massey College Football Rankings 1/7/2008), you will find the following based on the top 25 teams;
SEC = 5 teams in the top 25
Big10 = 4 teams in the top 25
Pac10 = 4 teams in the top 25
Big12 = 4 teams in the top 25
ACC = 3 teams in the top 25
Big East = 3 teams in the top 25
Mtn West = 1 team in the top 25
WAC = 1 team in the top 25

If you assign an inverse number to the rank of finish (1st = 25 points; 25th = 1 point), the following is how the same conferences rank;
SEC = 84 points
Big10 = 75 points
Pac10 = 51 points
ACC = 47 points
Big East = 40 points
Big12 = 29 points
WAC = 25 points
Mtn West = 12 points

I have to agree that Ohio St was over rated due to the lackluster schedule they played, but most enlightened sports fans acknowledge that without the injuries (and in particular to Dennis Dixon) Oregon would have been playing for the National Championship.

It's unfortunate that the two conferences don't match up more often. Cal crushed Tenn to start the season, but that meant nothing in the end. Or.State sure played a national championship LSU team close a few years ago and would have won if not for the odd missing of multiple extra points. The major conferences are pretty equal with one having a better year than the others now and then, but DW is way off base if he thinks the SEC is dominant. I frankly didn't think either team deserved to be in the Nat'l Championship game, nor were that overly gifted, (except for the LSU D. Tackle).

Huh? It's doubtful I would recognize a U of O football player if I was sitting next to him on the bus.

While I watched the rather dull "championship" bowl, I thought several times how much more fun the Pac-10 is to watch than those "other" leagues. Power up the middle is all well and good, but give me that fake Statue of Liberty, Dennis!

It's a trick question, they don't let you sit next to the bus driver

You SEC guys are living in a dream world. Now you want to tell me how good the conference is because you beat a two loss Ohio State team that shouldnt even have been there?

I always here how much faster the players in the SEC are. Then why couldnt they catch the Ohio running back on that 60 some yard jaunt?

I'm going to start calling the Ducks, Oregon University. That'll irritate em cause it also makes Oregon State sound better.

OK, first off the reason you always see sec teams (southern) and acc (eastern) teams in the championships is because ALL or most of the voters live there and also when are west coast teams play all the voters and coachs alike are all asleep..... So basically we hardley get any air time, I know USC is well know and they get votes, and that is because people hear the name USC and they will then record the game or stay up late to see just because of there name... Sorry for rambaling just my theroy. Oregon this Year could have played with anyone,. Now they might not have won the game, but with Dixon they would have challenged ANYONE.........College football is so compeative now days, back in the day Boise state would never have been that good, or even Southern Florida, but since the Ncaa lowered the number of scholarships, there is alot more competion......................
