Default Line for Spinning Reels

I know this is an old topic and I've researched the archives but I was wondering what is the preferred line for those that use spinning reels on a routine basis. My intended use is to be for sidedrifting bait for steelhead, generally planning on 10lb mainline with 6 or 8lb leaders. I'm trying to get the most abrasion resistance with little to no memory that I can. Thanks in advance.

I'll catch a lot of flack for this but my all time favorite spinning line is stren mangathin in green. Lowest memory of anything i've ever used. Go with 16lb test, it has the diameter of approximately 12lb maxima. Try it, you'll like it... Joe

Yeah and I'd like a line that wakes me up, plugs in the coffee and tells me whether or not my pants are on backwards.

I'm with Joe on this one. I like MagnaThin but in the 12 pound range for most salmon/steelhead and 6 pound works great on 16-18 inch redsides on the Deschutes. Yeah you have to change line often, but I'd rather do that because of triming off the nicks instead of losing a half spool to line twist in just one cast.

Hey fishen fool, remember the 47 pounder (yes the biggest on the board last year at chinook bend ). That fish ended up taking us around two different anchor ropes, hook was in the throat (line was rubbing all over those massive canines) then ended up dead in my fish box. Caught on 30lb magnathin thank you...

I've been using a line for several years that most people here have probably never heard of, yet alone have used. It's called P-Line. I use the CX Premium in 30 lb. for sturgeon and salmon and 10 lb. for steelhead. The line is one of the smallest diameter lines you can purchase. Another added benefit, the line is fluorocarbon coated for reduced visibility. Can't say if this really has improved my catch rate, but I can't complain. The price is comparable to other lines, try a 300 yard spool out and see for yorself.

In the past I've tried Trilene, Maxima, Stren, Andy and even Cabela's and Bass Pro shops brand of lines, the P-Line is the best I've used to date.

good luck,

Gregg

My 70 yr old neighbor (George) and avid stream fisherman uses Stren for it's visibility. He catches lots of fish. He's one of those meticulous about everything types (a nice way of saying, "almost neurotic).

George does not use Stren for his leaders, (just for his eyes ). There are probably many thing more important to catching fish than whether or not you care for Stren. Things like knowing where you line is . . .

Im with Salmonator, Magnathiv works great on spinning reels, as long as you step up in breaking strenth.
I used some line about 10 years ago that was just awesome on a spinning reel. I havent been able to find it anywhere. It is called Fintek or something like that? Anyone seen it around?

I have 2 lines that I use. one line is for boondogging only that is Ande tournament in 12 Lb green. The other that I just purchased for my second spool is as some others have mentioned Stren magnathin also in 12Lb. I was kinda leery of buying the Stren because it has not performed well for me in the past but it was recommended I have only put one day of use on it but, so far it performs well and hasn't started to coil on me even after using spinners. I really like the way it casts it is very smooth off the reel and doesn't tend to fall off or bounce back if the pressure is off the spool.

For boondoggin' in water with less than 4 ft of vis I use 10lb high vis (yellow) Ande. In clear water I use 8 or 10 lb green.
Good luck and tight lines, Jeff
