Default Imnaha bear hunt

I know it's still earlier to be thinking about spring bear but I don't have anything better to do. I'm new to bear hunting only been twice in the spring. Both times in chesnimus. First time no luck. Second time we were able to start seeing bears just not able to connect. My question is me and my hunting partner would like to go this years so we were thinking of Imnaha so we would have better odds of drawing a tag. Hopefully some of you guys would be willing to share some insight of were to go and what to look for in that unit?

Thank you

  • Harl butte Rd to Jaymes Ridge on out the end, hunt both side of the ridge.
  • Upper Gumboot.
  • Indian Crossings on up the trail past the burn and on up to the Blue Hole and beyond.
  • Above the burn around Salt Crk Summit. Hunt above the upper canal.
  • Camp at Lick Ck. and hunt up the road and back over to Coverdale.
That should do ya.

sherwin,

Not sure where you are located and what is convienient for you to hunt but SW Oregon is a give me. Garanteed tag, lots of area and the highest density of bears. If you devote a small amount of time during the right time periods it is dead bear time.

The other way is to learn an area over East and be content to draw once every other or every third year. This is what I used to do before I expored southern Oregon and found that now I have a shorter drive, automatic tag, and shorter pack (usually not quite as steep).

Hunt'nFish nailed it...I would add Deadhorse ridge to that list. Thing you gotta realize about the Imnaha unit is that the snow can keep you out of the best country until later in May. Private land will keep the early season access to a minimum. The USFS 39 road is your best bet getting into the country mentioned above. So...you will have that to contend with.

Boy I'll say its a rough drive. Most folks don't know rough until you set your bumper straight on that road.

You will need a atv 4x4 to get around because of the snow. We hunted for a week and didn't see much. Harl butte had a large bear roaming around but never could find him. We put a lot of miles on the atv's. We had to go to Imnaha then up the river to on the other side of the unit. The scenic highway had to much snow. Pretty open in some places. Good luck !
