Default Hawaii, fish which side?

Going to the Big Island in Feb and plan to do both fishing and diving. Most diving will be shore diving around Kona where we are staying in a house next to white sands beach. Been here a few times. Maybe diving South Point as well to find a few lobsters and fish to eat. If I was to go on a fishing trip which side of the Island would you fish? West side Kona or East side Hilo area? Anyone have history their or know if fishing is equal or better on one side or the other?
Thanks

Brad

Little Doc is right. Kona is on the leeward side of the island and much more comfortable for fishing.

Thumbs up Re: Hawaii, fish which side?

FISH KONA! Last time i was there my dad and i rented a boat from the guy down in the harbor and fished the break right of the shore from the old air port. It was killer we landed a couple of ono and hooked in to a really good one, but the wire got cut:frown:. Thing you need to do is when you get there go into the tackle shop at the harbor, I think Don still owns it wiht his wife. When you get there you need to buy a merotter. I is a bait that is done by Braid tackle and it is one hot Bait!

Hope you have a great trip and bring back pictures!

Thanks for the info. Six years ago a friend lived there in Kona and we went out fishing. We caught a few small fish and then while trolling for my first time for marlin the rod goes off, I grab it and start fighting, the belt goes on and I fight for some time, gaining line then line pealing out. What was it, we had snagged a big piece of fish net that the current was dragging around. Then we spent the rest of the day working on the boat motor just to get back in as it had developed some electrical problem. He has moved so I will be looking for a new ride this time.
thanks
