Default Vancouver Lake

Luckyr and myself are thinking about going on our first duck hunt next Sunday. Can a guy just walk in someplace arround Vancouver Lake, throw out some decoys, and blow on a call? Were not looking for limits, just trying to get our feet wet. I've seen ducks out there but never hunted them. Is this a decent place to try?

Try to find a flooded field that's situated close to a stand of trees or fence line or hedge row! Best bet would be to sit locking at your decoys with the wind blowing from either the right or ledt from where your sitting. That way the ducks will be flying in a line towards your decoys from downwind (right or left) and not be looking in your direction. You may not even need decoys if you find soem open water deep in the trees. Their may be some vehicle trails through the woods that are flooded. These work great if you can call ducks close enough to wing shoot.

There are places around the lake you can walk into. Shillapoo is a big walk in area. Look on the WDFW web site and look at the maps.

You wont be alone, so try and distance yourself from the skybusters enough so that the birds could work your spread with out getting shot at. Also you would likely be well served to leave your calls at home, or atleast leave them hanging around your neck if you like the look.

This late in the season, (or anytime realy), a good spread, good location, good hide, and silent patience will serve a duck hunter well.
