Default Plug question

A guy from work offered to take me down the clack the other day, and while I am fairly new to plugging, he swore by running his HS 30 behind a # 10 diver.?
If the Hot Shot dives to that relative depth in current then why would this make a diff?
I kept to my straight plug, neither of us picked a fish up, but it didn't make sense to me.
But I'm not sure he knew what he was doing any way, first time I've ever fished with him and he didn't know what a puffball was and didn't know what I meant when I told him to mend his line when we were jig fishing.

Never done it that way myself. But I have also seen divers used in larger rivers and catch fish. Who knows It all depends on the situation

Just because the guy doesn't know techniques or tackle that you're familiar with doesn't mean he doesn't know his stuff. On the other hand, I don't think I've ever heard of anyone running a hotshot on a diver. I could see running a Kfish on a diver for springers in deep holes but that's not the kind of rig or water that would work on winters.

I guess the real question is "Did it work?" or "Did you hook fish?". In New Zealand they troll with a floating fly line - imagine that!

We didn't hook any fish.
I used a straight plug as he used the diver and plug.
I did notice the action on his rod was harder to keep track of from the extra drag.
Who knows.I don't mean to down the guy, I will be eager to learn new tricks until the day I go.
Just haven't heard of plug pullin in shallow rivers with a diver.
