Are some guys bad luck............?
I went out duck hunting today. I took a new acquaintance that I have recently started hunting with. Three trips total.
I have not hit the bottom of my boat on the Snake River in about 5 years. Two of the trips with this guy on board I have hit something. He is a big boy, so we made be riding just a little lower in the water.
The third time out the boat some how comes loose and floats down the river 2.5 miles. We are stuck on the island. The lady deputies come out and rescue us and Jake the wonder dog from our island prison.
He brought it up today. "I think I may be bad luck". It got me thinking.
What do you guys think? His and mine hunting career is hanging in the balance.

For sure some guys can be bad luck...without a doubt. I think the only thing you can do is "work" threw it and "get the stink off."
Or...find another partner.

Re: Are some guys bad luck............?
No way can people be bad luck. I don't believe it. If you start believing it, you'll start preparing for it, and it will become a self fulfilling prophecy of sorts.
Chalk it up to "off days" and make sure he isn't bringing a banana on board in his lunch

One of the Greatest phrases I've heard in my short life.
If you have bad luck, then you clearly are not ready to accomplish your task.
So in short, people cannot be the source of bad luck.

Re: Are some guys bad luck............?
Not directly. However, we all know the guys who you take hunting or fishing and their own "karma" disrupts what we are doing to the point where we can't be successful.
One guy that I just could not hunt with anymore because:
1. He would not drive faster than 50 mph
2. He always forgot some key piece of personal equipment. Cartridges, gun, license, etc.
A handful of trips like that were enough. I'm also convinced that people who are like that can disrupt my train of thought to the point where I'm more apt to run the boat into a stump, or step on my rod, etc. When you have to babysit another person you are distracted to the point where you will make mistakes.
I sound a lot more harsh than I really am, but I'm completely serious that if people don't have their act together, it won't just impact their success. It will carry over to everyone in the group.
And all that being said, there are a couple of iFishers who have been more than tolerant of my own mistakes.
regards,
aw

You realize this thread could roll over into a "Superstitions" thread.
No, no, don't do it now. We need to start another thread for that topic.
But in the meantime, yes, I think some guys are bad luck. I think some guys warp karma to produce bad luck; i.e. they might not have bad luck themselves, but when they come in proximity to you, bad luck happens.

Re: Are some guys bad luck............?
I have a buddy we call "Uh-oh". He seems to be a magnet for trouble.
He's launched his truck, boat & trailer, he's broken his neck in a swimming pool just after he quit his job and gave up his health insurance, etc. etc.
Almost every time I've been boarded by the OSP or USCG he's been with me. I kid him about why I still hunt with him and say, "the reason I still hunt with you is if we ever got injured or lost I'd have him break one game law and OSP would find us in about 3 minutes."

Do you enjoy the time you spend with him? If the answer is not a definite yes, then cut your losses and find a new partner. Time outdoors is too precious to spend with anyone that isnt great to be with.....just my opinion. If you really like him and you guys have fun then all the follies will end up as good campfire chat.

Re: Are some guys bad luck............?
He is a decent guy. Safe, Fun, good sense of humor and chips in on the fuel.
I was due for some escapades on the boat. The area of the Snake that I hunt is difficult in daylight, much less the dark.
If you are going to go out and live life a few pitfalls are going to come your way.
There was a guy I got asked to take fishing about 10 years ago by my wife. He was all hot to go hunting. Had never done it, wanted to try it. We only made it through the fishing trip. A class A jerk.
Another friend of ours took him out the next fall bird hunting. The second trip out he tried to shoot a pheasant on the ground and ended up killing the guys dog. It sure confirmed my concerns with the guy. I am not sure of the out come if someone shot my dog. You could put a hole in the boat. You could drop my gun in the river, but don't shoot the dog.

Re: Are some guys bad luck............?
There is no such thing as luck. You simply put yourself in front of opportunity enough and it's bound to run into you once in a while (for better or worse)!
Good for you taking a new guy out, I was a new guy once, how about you? Help him learn and you'll both do well together, and another person is supporting our sport.
Yep, I still hit a few bumps now and then, and the ducks don't always fly my way.......
Good luck out there,

Re: Are some guys bad luck............?
I dont think a guy could be bad luck.
Likely the problem is the guy doest bring anything to the table. He doest add any support, or he isnt a good set of seccond eyes.
I find that if I hunt with a person that can add skill and knowledge to the situation things go smooth because there is two of us watching out and taking care. If I hunt with a person that cant add any skill or knowledge to the situation then things tend to go bad because I just cant do it all and babysit at the same time.

Taking Fishkisser's rationale a little farther. May be it would be better to have the sacrificial lightening rod with you. That way if anything bad happens it happens to the other guy.
Fish kiss might just be on to something.

Re: Are some guys bad luck............?
I have had a freind for years that has yet to kill any big game animal and when it comes to fishing....it gets even worse.
Back in the mid-80's when we were teenagers, we used to salmon fish from the south jetty on the Columbia bar. We usually caught fish. One day, 4 of us hiked out near the elbow and began to hammer the silvers. As most will remember, fishing the jetty for salmon was tough. Many big swells, sharp rocks and snag galore. Sometimes we would hook several just to land one.
This day was hot with multiple hook-ups and bites. My buddy could not buy a hit. We switched places with him, rigged his rod and tried everything to get him just one hit. It didn't work.
After a couple hours and everyone limiting out we had to give up without him even touching a fish.
He rarely hooks fish and I cannot think of a time in over two decades where he has outfished any of us. He does catch an occasional fish, but it's just sad.

Re: Are some guys bad luck............?
Trick, I've never fished the south jetty, but you must be talking about me. A few years back a buddy of mine filled two tags. The following year we started fishing together and he filled a half a tag. Next year, same thing. Now I do occasionally catch a fish, but it's always a native. Not kidding. I've yet to tag a fish. And yes, I am keenly aware of when I can and cannot keep a non fin clipped fish. With hundreds of hours with a spin'n'glo, thousands upon thousands of hours of drift fishing, and a couple hundred hours in a boat I should have accidentally hooked one by now. My friend refuses to fish with me any more and his 'luck' has returned. One time on opening day at Hagg two friends and I were plunking power bait over the side of an anchored boat, they were getting bites left and right, they smoked and I chew. After a while I had them bait my hook, no bites. We even tried switching poles after we casted. That worked,........for my buddy. The only upside to all this is that the above buddies wife and mine were good friends and she had someone else to verify that no, I was not having an affair.

Re: Are some guys bad luck............?
I find that when crap happens when I take someone new out fishing Hunting or what ever It is caused by my self, talking to much and not paying attention what I am doing or back in my mind I am saying LOOK AT ME SEE HOW GOOD I AM AT THIS ( it's just plain and simple Called showing off ) and that is when Things go wrong.
My fishing Pard. and I out in the ocean have had days when it depends what rod holder your rods is in, same spot catches the bigger % of fish doesn't matter who's rod is in that holder, it can change from trip to trip, I have had times when I get more than my share of hits but they don't stick ( drive buys ) don't worry I use good hooks that are sharp.. Who can explain it, NOT I NOR YOU it just happens and you can call it anything you want but it still happens.
Luck is a word just like Chance, in and of them selfs they have no power what so ever.
