Bag, box, bucket?
When you fish on the bank, what do you use as a tackle carrier?
I used to take a bucket, filled with stuff out to the beach on the Columbia. It even had a neato seat I made to go over the top, and I sat on it while fishing!
But out to the streams, then into the boat, I find myself needing a bag or box.
I think I am tending towards bags this year.
I have a steelhead bag that I absolutely love, and I don't miss my plastic, awkward tackle box at all!
Lots of neat pockets for jigs, bobbers, lead, a holdzit container for different yarn attached to the zipper. I love it!
Even has a handy dandy place for lipstick!
Anyway... Are bags the best for you?
Different bags for each?
I like the idea of a file cabinet with all of your stuff, for every season, and then bags hanging on the wall to grab, go fill, and go!

Jennie, If drift fishing from the bank I have always used a vest. I think I would feel naked without it. All salmon and steelhead gear kept in the same vest.

Re: Bag, box, bucket?
I have standing orders with two retired ladies that go garage saling... for..... yes... LADIES PURSES... (OK RT, here you go, let me have it) actually leather ladies purses make excellent creeles. Hang from your sholder...work great for me for many years.....NOTE: When I do fish from the bank , it is for a specific fish, usually in a specific stretch of water and using specific gear...IR" Clack Springers in the upper river... all I need is a few bobbers, 3-4 2 - 5 oz sinkers, a few swivles and bobbers, hooks ,leader and a jar of eggs.... same for silvers in the clack/ e creek/trask or nookers in the wilson....great if you don't need too much gear....and cheap... I have a good vest and prefer the creeles....

Re: Bag, box, bucket?
I feel a little old fashoned. I generally use a trail pack. Then I put my bait, spinners and such in small boxes. This way I can also carry snacks, h20,beer and whatever else. It makes it easy to wade around too. Being stuck to bank fishing at the moment. The pic looks pretty cool though.

I use an Army field jacket during the winter and a vest during the summer. The field jacket is great because its got lots of deep pockets.

vest for me fishing the bank, from a boat tackle box, i did try a coldwater creek chest pack for awhile, but it just didn't have enough room for all my stuff, so converted it to fly/trout tackle for fishing in the float tube.

Re: Bag, box, bucket?
The bags are the way to go. You can buy extra plastic containers to swap out the gear you need for the given trip....
And of course, the vest for the bank

Re: Bag, box, bucket?
I can see using a bucket with a seat if your fishing one location. But when I bank fish, roaming around covering different holes I like a vest. I've also used a canvas creel with good results.
For each outing, I re-arrange the vest to fit the river and species I'm targeting. A few more vest would be helpful. Going to pass on the purse idea Fishbait, just don't see myself styling in womens wear while fishing , also worried about color coordinating. You might try Goodwill, they usually sell what your looking for.

Re: Bag, box, bucket?
I also always wear a vest...a nylon vest with big fron pockests to hold gutz and other bait. It also has a wrap around pocket at the back to pack fishi out. The vest weight a ton though fully loaded.

Re: Bag, box, bucket?
I use a vest for the stuff that I carry regularly that I need for any trip, but the specialized for each species goes in a compact belt pack that holds everything I need. It can easily be switched out at home when I switch from one species to the next.

Re: Bag, box, bucket?
When I go fishing from the bank I prefer using a vest to keep all my gear in. Sometimes I will carry along a small cooler bag with ice to keep my bait in. This works great when the weather is warm and it keeps your bait nice and fresh. Although if I plan on doing any serious hiking, I keep the bag at home.
While in the boat I carry a box stocked with all sorts of gear: Plugs, Divers, Pre-tied Leaders, Drift Bobbers, ect... and several bags. One for lunch and one for bait. The bags store nicely under the seat or in the storage compartment.
Buckets work great if you plan to stay in one spot for a period of time. For Bank fishing in Tidewater they work great. You know, when you get the river three hours before it gets light out and you need a place to sit.

Re: Bag, box, bucket?
When Im banking it for steelhead I usually just use my vest. The vest wieghs a ton, so Im always taking it off while Im fishing. I always seem to take way more stuff then I neeed.
Most of the time when Im banking it for salmon I use a back pack. I toss in some floats, pretied leaders, various leads, spinners and so on. I seem to take a lots gear when Im targeting salmon.

Wood River bag. Lots of pockets and no arm movement restriction for casting a fly like a vest.

Re: Bag, box, bucket?
From the bank I always use my vest; over loaded with gear. From boats nice bags which hold all the goodies or the large plano box. I've fished with ****** and know why his bag is so big... it's a mobile spinner lab .

Re: Bag, box, bucket?
I can carry all the gear i need for a steel head trip in my shirt pocket 6 pearly okies,6 hooks,6 snap swivels, and 6 slinks,I get my jollies watching people, lug a 50# tackle box, trip after trip, and only use .oo1% of its contents,
next time you go fishing, look in your gear hauler and see how much of this tackle you really used or needed, better yet, look in your boat and count the rods, I actually saw a guide with 11 rods in his boat, with 1 client,is this a status symble or what?
If you run out of gear?look for bill hedlund he always has tons of gear you can borrow

I was looking through the archives, and here he is. I sure miss him!
Anyhow, the question is still out there, and now you know about fishbait!
Purses! He's right, though... my old good leather purses do the trick on the bank!

A couple of years ago, I picked up a backpack at a garage sale. It sure works great when you need to concentrate on getting your pole through the bushes....

Re: Bag, box, bucket?
Go to Joes Wal-Mart and buy one of those personal soft coolers. They are ridiculously cheap (under $10). They are quite durable, I have had one for years and it gets used at least once a week. They are very nice because you can also use it for clothing since they are waterproof.
I am very particular about my tackle boxes and never did like the layout of the store bought "soft" tackle boxes.

Re: Bag, box, bucket?
Still have 3 of my favorite ones. Medium size, strong leather and tan. Don't really care for the pink ones...... p
Currently I use a commerical small soft tackle bag made by Plano, really nice. Don't do allot of bank fishing anymore so don't really need much stuff, A few hooks, leader and couple bobbers.
Wish I could repeate what Jim said about my purses when he saw me with a new one one day.

Re: Bag, box, bucket?
Louie Vuitton purse.
Seriously I use a vest for my gear all the time. I also bring a backpack for rain gear or jacket, snacks, bait, extra gear, camera, etc.
I mounted a cooler bag on my bike for beverages and bait. Also have mounted a couple of rod holders.
If I can drive next to where I fish, I'll use a small bucket for beverages and bait to shuttle between the cooler.
I leave my tackle box at home and have extra gear and tackle in my truck hidden away.
