Applegate River Steelhead
Hey,
I am heading down to spend the weekend on the family farm near Murphy. Does the Applegate have any steelhead in the river at this time?? Just thought that I would try and get a little bit of fishing time in while I was down there if any fish are around.
Thanks,
TB

Re: Applegate River Steelhead
About 12 years ago, I would fish it this time of the year, but I don't know how runs are. I would fish near (Highway 199, I think), but if that's not the right Highway number, it's the one heading over the Applegate River toward Cave Junction out of Grants Pass. Nightcrawlers and corkies combined were the ticket. I bet the dreaded pink worm under a bobber would work, or a jig. Better check the regs, I don't even know if it is still open or not.

Re: Applegate River Steelhead
I have heard from some of the locals the main part of the run comes in mid March. Then it closes at the end of that month. But I have heard they have been catching some fish there. Have also heard spoons work good there. I took my pontoon boat down it a couple of times last year. Did not do real well, but it was fun. FYI - one of the major regs is no fishing from a floating device. Good luck.

Re: Applegate River Steelhead
There should be a fair number of fish in the lower end, especially. My guess is there are some as high as Murphy as well. Haven't seen the river lately but guess it to be low and clear.
As someone else mentioned, it is a hot spoon river with Cleo's being the most popular.

Talk to Wolfhunter. He lives down there on the Applegate in Jacksonville.

Re: Applegate River Steelhead
AS I recall, little cleos, drifted roe or half a night crawler. Fish the pee stop south of the Murphy bridge or fish hatchery bridge area. March is usually best but as long as there is decent water it should produce fish this month.

Re: Applegate River Steelhead
My buddy and I both have March B-days and try to spend them there. We have good luck with cleos and bait. I didn't make it last year but he slayed them on fly in late March. Good luck
