Re: is this legal for sturgeon?
I don't see why not, as long as you're barbless.

Re: is this legal for sturgeon?
You don't want much of a dropper. The bait needs to be on the bottom.

Re: is this legal for sturgeon?
that looks more salmon like to me, I would also want the bait closer to the bottom, good idea though!

Re: is this legal for sturgeon?
I rig like that for some situations but never for sturgeon. My dad once caught a 53in sturgeon while trolling for chinook and silvers in 40 ft of water at 12 pulls, go figure (yes, the sturgeon was hooked legally). That was a fluke I'm sure. I would think that rigging like that would make for a slow day on the water. Just my .02

Re: is this legal for sturgeon?
OFF THE BANK WE FISH A 32IN WEIGHT DROPPER WITH A 2-4 INCH LEADER AND DO GREAT!

Re: is this legal for sturgeon?
Well maybe depending on how big the rocks are as the dropper would settle HOPEFULLY between the rocks leaving the bait at the level the fish are holding. You would have to expect to break the lead off most of the time. I would not mess w/ the proven methods that work 98.5% of the time.

Re: is this legal for sturgeon?
This is a common rig for bank fishing below bonneville dam. The length of the dropper line helps the bait stay above the large rocks and boulders. Out of a boat the rig will need a much longer leader and a lot less dropper

Re: is this legal for sturgeon?
I don't have the regs handy, but I think in Oregon there is a rule triggered by hook size that dictates the weight be above the hook. Big sturgeon sized hook and a longer lead line than leader not be legal.

Re: is this legal for sturgeon?
I just put my foot in my mouth. I read the regs and it seems that you can not have any weight below your hook. Am I reading this correct?

Re: is this legal for sturgeon?
Perfect Bonneville and Estuary Bankie set-up there. Use lighter than mainline on leadline for a breakaway since your fishing the rocks and a snag is inevitable.
I usually use 2 sandshrimp tied on instead of the smelt with that set-up.

Re: is this legal for sturgeon?
the reason i ask is i saw a guy go 10:1 aginst me on gators on day.. his biggest being 49in. was last year and the regs said weight above bait for salmon steelhead and sturgeon... this year no mention of sturgeon.. wanted to make sure I am interpreting it correctly. this rig up kicks butt from what i have seen and i want to use it but want to be legal. thanks all

Re: is this legal for sturgeon?
I wouldn't worry about it. The regulation is intended to deter snagging in salmon waters, and I would be surprised if the warden would make an issue of it. If you are unsure, I'd give the office a call and ask to speak to an enforcement officer for the area, and ask him. I have found them to be very willing to advise.

Re: is this legal for sturgeon?
sure, barbless hook, but a shorter leader and a slider w/ the weight would be more effective, in my opinion. Although maybe this keeps the sculpin away?

Re: is this legal for sturgeon?
I have talked to guys that do it that way before and they swear by it. As mentioned though make sure that your lead line is light enough to break off. The guy I talked with said that he frays or scuffs his lead line to make sure it breaks off easily.

Re: is this legal for sturgeon?
sorry guys this is an old post, i went to page 27 to look at my signature, forgot that this would bring this up to the front.....
but now that its here......what he drew is my standard bank cast thing.
STORY...last year i met an veitnamese guy on the bank below bonnville (long story short) we went sturg fishing on oct 30th in my boat,an old 16' starcraft with a top, key word is TOP we anchord just out of reach of the bankers on the wash. side near the out house....rain, then heavy rain. back to the story,he brought live croppy in a 5 gal bucket, he hooked us up with a fillet of croppy. then he went to hook up his line like we do on the bank, in the meantime here comes a big alumaweld guide boat(no top) i said you need to use this slider ect,..he left his bank gear on.....BAM 55 incher... i rerigged to bank gear, got a 55 an hour later.
...we left at 11:am

Re: is this legal for sturgeon?
Thats my bank rig there. I feel having the bait about a foot or more off the bottom helps transmit the bite a little better for us bankies. I have experimented with this and found that a short lead line results in very soft, almost undetectible bites where as a longer lead line usually results in a harder and more aggresive take. I think that having your bait on the bottom the fish can suck on it and sit in one spot. Just my .02
