Ifish Predator 'Safari"
DATES and PLACE ANNOUNCED: Frederick Butte~March 7-8-9, 2008
N 43.38.209 W 120.28.252 (Campsite)
As the New Year approaches, it's time to begin thinking about the Third Annual Ifish Predator "Safari". After numerous PM requests, untold numbers of emails, and a burning desire on my part to get out to hunt coyotes, I am ready to seriously begin the quest for a great spot to camp and hunt.
Along these lines, I am always open to suggestions and otherwise useful information. OK, guys and gals, it's time to lobby for your favorite area of the State. The only requirement is that the location has enough room for the expected 15 to 20 attendees, and that a coyote or two live in close proximity to the area. (Real close proximity!!)
As for dates, I am leaning towards early to mid March. My reasons are two fold. First and foremost, I seem to have pretty good success in the early Spring, and two, the Springers really haven't started to bite as yet. (Two very valid points, if I do say so myself!! Lol!)
BTW~I would also appreciate any comments on whether or not there is sufficient interest in holding a "Predator Safari" in 2008. I would rather know in advance if no one is coming, rather than chase down a spot for no reason. Thanks!!

Re: Ifish Predator 'Safari"
I just got back from the Christmas Valley area and saw tons of coyotes around the hay fields and some surrounding areas. Unfortunately, lots of the farmers there won't let you shoot coyotes on their property. I saw a couple of coyotes on the Frederick Butte road where you guys hunted last year. Not much sign around Glass Buttes, at least on the west side.

Obviously, lots can happen in 90 days. But, I am definitely interested and, barring something unforeseen, I'll go. And, my brother, Jon, might also be interested. Don

Re: Ifish Predator 'Safari"
I'd be likely to go too...I'm semi experienced with my Johnny Stewart caller. I have killed most of my yotes in the christmas valley area, but think that it might be a better idea to find a less hunted area. I'll likely be over east within the 2 or 3 weeks so I'll do some scouting.

I'm in. Last year, we saw more sign more East of Christmas Valley, maybe a camp off of 395. Hey Rusty, order up just a little less snow this time.

I would like to go but it depends on how far over east you go. I have 3 electronic callers ( 2 J/S's and a fox pro ) and several mouth calls ( just learning how with mouth calls)

Predator Safari DATES and PLACE!
FREDERICK BUTTE CAMPSITE: N 43.38.209 W 120.28.252
GPS Coordinates.
After deep discussions with several avid predator hunters on Ifish, and some spirited bantering back and forth, the Date and Place for the 3rd Annual Predator Safari are being announced. Believe me, lots of thought went into the logic behind our decision, but bottom line, we have decided on the Frederick Butte site again for this year's event.
Most everyone agreed that the campsite was ideal, that was not an issue. The extreme cold weather encountered, coupled with high winds, really didn't allow us to give the area the chance it deserved to be top notch. We saw TONS of sign, we just fought the weather all day long.
The Date for the event will be March 7-8-9, 2008 and we certainly hope you can attend.
As was the case last year, this is a Do-It-Yourself affair. Each hunter is responsible for his own camp and equipment, but most likely, we will have a Headquarters Tent set up for evening seminars and "fellowship". (Read into that what you want. )
I anticipate lots of questions, so watch this POST for the required updates and answers to your questions.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
Rusty

That's too late for bobcat hunters. Did you consider the bobcat season when you set the date?

Re: Predator Safari DATES and PLACE!
Ni!
We did consider Bobcats being closed, but the dates seemed to fit in best for weather and other conflicts.
In any event, let's hope coyotes take up the slack.
(One other thing to consider, early March is a great time to howl!!)

Re: Predator Safari DATES and PLACE!
I'm seriously thinking about going, but I've got to tell you I'm pretty bummed about the dates falling after bobcat season. I was hoping to get over there again to try for a kitty and I don't know how many trips I can justify with these gas prices being what they are. Plus, with the "always predictable" great weather we get the last week in February I think that would be a great time to go.
But...I guess I shouldn't complain too much. Maybe some sage rats will be showing themselves by then.

Re: Predator Safari DATES and PLACE!
I’ve been kind of a lurker on these predator hunting topics, but it really sounds like fun. I’ve only tried for coyote once, but no dogs.
So I’ll ask the question. Where is Frederick Butte? I can find a Frederick Butte RD. east of La Pine using Google Maps. And with the Terrain feature, I can see several buttes around that area, but no Frederick Butte.
Thanks!
Paul

Re: Predator Safari DATES and PLACE!
I can't believe it is that time of the year again! I've got it marked on the calendar now and I can't wait. Now I just have to convince PGH RiverRat to come along again.
For anyone thinking about getting into Coyote hunting, this is a great opportunity to hook up with some knowledgeable people and meet some fellow iFishers. Even with the snow last year and the uncooperative songdogs, it was a great time.
See you all there.

Re: Ifish Predator 'Safari"
So As for people that need to car pool my car will go over there no problem the only problem will be if there is snow on the side road. so if anyone in a truck has an extra seat so I am not stuck in the snow I can kick down some gas money. other wise I will park in Brothers in hike in hahahahaha if you see a fat popsicle on the side of the dirt road then pick me up. If it is not snowing or bad mud then I will drive on over and can offer someone a lift over I plan on leaving Friday afternoon and coming back sunday afternoon rp

Re: Ifish Predator 'Safari"
'Bumping this to the top.
I've PM'd back and forth, with Rusty, a couple of times yesterday. He should be up for the trip after his accident. He said it was okay for me to give an update, from his PM's:
Quote:
Yeah, I will be OK for the Ifish hunt, but I just do not know how much I will be able to participate. It just depends on if the swelling goes down enough to make me more comfortable.
The pain is not continuous as before. . . . .
So, the scope of my hunting will depend on when this pain goes away, or at least most of it!
Bottom line, I'm a bit better, but the healing process for broken ribs is a long process and I'm far from 100% just yet.

Re: Ifish Predator 'Safari"
I'm in.
A few questions though..... - Are quads necessary? I have access to one, should I get it? OR can you get near the good hunting grounds in a Ford F-250 long bed 4X4?
- I have a small dump trailer that I can load with wood and other people's gear/ATV's if needed.
- Do people "team up" to hunt or go out on their own?
Looking forward to it.

Tell me you picked it because Coyote rock is right there in that area.
I hunt deer in the burns area and see them every time I go over that way.

Re: Ifish Predator 'Safari"
Quads are not necessary but conditions last year made a quad the only way to travel. Our later date might help in the snow dept. I am sure glad I had mine (Actually I brought two!)
We HIGHLY encourage partnering up with a buddy during this hunt. A lot of very experienced guys come on this trip and usually are most willing to take a "newbie" out and show him how it's done. I know I am more than willing to help someone learn, if I heal up from my ATV accident!

I'm definitely a newbie, but have been wanting to take this up. If there is someone with experience, that wants to help educate me on the finer points of killing coyotes, I'd certainly drive.
"Quads are not necessary but conditions last year made a quad the only way to travel.
Rusty"
Rusty, I'm more than willing to help get you over there, if you're still banged up.

Re: Ifish Predator 'Safari"
Hey, with Rusty's snoring, nobody will hear the generator. I could borrow a very quiet Honda, so let me know when the time gets closer.
Last year we had a lot of snow, but a F250 with some good traction tires had no problem, I know I have a '76. The biggest threat is wet and warm, then you get mud and a big problem. Of coarse Baltz will be there to watch out for us. I don't think anybody will have a problem with quads, this is good country for them with a lot of side roads that you might not want to drive with a pick up.
Looks like we might have a big camp this year. Looks like I might have to thaw out more catfish Mike.

Re: Ifish Predator 'Safari"
I know someone that has run the cPap machine off of a 12v battery and an inverter, just recharge the battery during the day. Not sure if this is easier for you or not, just throwing it out there.

Re: Ifish Predator 'Safari"
It sounds like this years event will have an even better turn out than last year.
While final plans are not yet set in stone, you can bet there will be some excellent seminars on the various aspects of predator hunting. I know I plan on doing a talk on Howling for Coyotes. If anyone else wants to step up and talk on any one of the relevant topics, I sure would like to hear from you.

Would a bolt gun for 400-500yrds be more useful than say 150yrd. gun for this hunting?

What, you mean it won't hit anything at 150yds??? Of course it'll work! One good shot is all you need.
Of course if it has a 8-25x scope mounted on it you might have a hard time FINDING it in the scope at 50yrds!
Bring what you have and we'll have ALL the bases covered......right??

Re: Ifish Predator 'Safari"
Ryan,
I'm bringing my Honda generator again this year so you can hook up to that if you want to. It's quiet and we can put it away from camp if needed. It won't bother anyone. Looking forward to hanging out again and seeing your home made caller.

Re: Ifish Predator 'Safari"
Ok, if you have room for two more begginers I think I can talk my hunting partner into doing this. I saw last years pics. and was sorry I didn't do it then, so this will be the year. We have the clothes and the gear but no clue on how to call in the yotes. If you don't mind two more begginers I think Tim and I can make this trip. Shon.

Re: Ifish Predator 'Safari"
I just noticed a date change on the first thread. Is it in March now? I was thinking that it was this weekend.

Re: Predator Safari DATES and PLACE!
You are more than welcome to join us! Everyone starts out as a "greenhorn" and I expect a number of your fellow hunters are in the same boat.
Bring your camp and join the fun!
