Winner of 75th Anniversary Federal Duck Stamp Contest Named
Wildlife artist Joe Hautman of Plymouth, Minn., won the 2007 Federal Duck Stamp Art Contest – the oldest and most prestigious wildlife art competition in America – with his depiction of a pair of pintail ducks. Department of the Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne announced the winner in front of a crowd of 300 people at the contest, held at BIG Arts in Sanibel, Florida.

Great work- the guys that play the lighting usually win and rightfully so. The degree of difficulty on that painting is mind-boggling. I wouldn't even say that the proportions are NAILED on that sprig, but everything else is so great!

I can't wait to put that on the back of next years license.


I believe I saw on an episode of DU TV that he and his 2 brothers have won the duck stamp contest a few times between each of them. If they keep putting out prints like this one I can see them winning a few more times down the road.

Same thing I thought- great use of light but the proportions don't look right on either bird.

I've bought two Steiner prints and while I enjoy them, duck print art in general has almost gotten to the point of photorealism. We'll never see an impressionist version of a duck win that competition but I really like some of the older prints better. I gotta agree that there is some amazing talent in being able to paint something to the degree of accuracy of a photograph.
