Default 2.937 Axle for Towing?

I was looking at an Infiniti QX56 and saw that the axle is 2.937. Doesn't that seem high for towing? Or will it not really matter? Figure towing 6-7k lbs. The Nissan Armada is slightly better at 3.357. Expy is 3.73 and my Suburban was 4.10 so this is new to me.

All depends on final drive ratio. Axle factored in with transmission might work out to be ok. But 2.937 does seem a little high. Probably can't put much weight back there. I am sure there is someone who will be able to tell the specifics on how it works.

2.93 is the axle. and all cars and trucks have a gear that is direct drive which means the engine speed is the same rpm that is going to the final drive. No matter the trans 2.93 is to tall. That car is made for looking good, not towing. IMO.

I wouldn't tow that much weight with anything taller than a 3.73 for the hills we have around here.

Don't forget tire size, so may people put on bigger tires it throw off the final ratio. there are some good sites on the web for calculations.you should know your torque and horsepower optiman rpms makes it easy then

Differential Gear Ratio determines the number of times the drive shaft (or pinion) will rotate for each turn of the wheels (or ring gear). So if you have a 3.73:1 gear ratio the drive shaft turns 3.73 times for every turn of the wheel. The ratio will be the same no matter what size tires are used.
The speedometer reading in MPH will change but not the gear ratio.

If you put taller tires on it will have the effect of a higher gear ratio. True the mechanical ratio is still the same but the larger circumfrence and taller diameter will change the final drive ratio and make it higher. You Will Lose power. Maybe with a diesel you won't notice it. Do it on a 4 cyl and really shows.

A few years ago I had a 20' boat that weighed in at 4000lbs plus trailer..My wife's rig was suburban with a diesel and 3.00 rear end....It would tow the load..barely My rig was a ford 150 with the 300 six and 3.00 rear end ...I used the gear shift a lot ...fortunately the ford had a 4 spd. with a granny ...again the load was to much ...my current boat weighs over 8000# plus trailer ..my chev. 3/4 ton with 350 engine and 3.73 gears is adequate but not much to spare...hope that helps

Remembered talking to a guy who owns an Armada. His mpg is terrible when towing an off road vehicle. Something like 6-7mpg. Thought it was pretty bad because my old Suburban towed more weight and got better mpg than his Armada.
