Default Distance for Trolling Plate

Hi everyone, thanks in advance if anyone helps me out here. I bought a trolling plate from Johnson Marine Supply. It's cast aluminum with springs.

http://www.johnsonmarinesupply.com/h...ing_plates.htm

My question is.. when mounted on the top of the cavitation plate as directed .. the trolling plate is about 7 inches behind the prop. This seems a bit far back to me, however I have no experience. I don't want to drill holes if this is incorrect.

Maybe I should just try trolling with my 40 HP 4 stroke. I mostly want to troll the Klickitat to the campground, and the buoy out front.

Cool Re: Distance for Trolling Plate

The way they are designed for the fork of the plate to fit around the lower unit housing ... I don't really see how you could get it much closer ... Maybe you could clamp it on and see how it works ... I don't use a trolling plate as I have a T-8 kicker ... Barney

I just measured mine. It is 7" from the plate to the prop blade. Mine works fine. I also have a trolling motor, but if the wind is blowing hard, it is easier for me to control the boat with a trolling plate.
