Re: Destruction
This is from the website fo FDNY engine 9
5-5-5-5
At 0848 hrs on 9-11-01, Engine 9/Satellite 1 and Ladder 6 were among the units dispatched for the
explosion and fire at the top of one of the World Trade Center towers which turned out to be the
first wave of terrorist war against this country.
In the long minutes following the order to evacuate all Members, Engine 9 had just left the first
floor landing as the tower crashed down around them. Ladder 6 was between the first and second
floors. Miraculously, Engine 9 was swept away by the blast and managed to shelter from the crush
of the tower. Ladder 6, alive, yet trapped in the ruin that the Members can only describe as "a
vision of Hell" somehow dug themselves out after four hours of valiant struggle.
In the meantime, scores of off-duty Members from E-9, L-6 and every single Company on the job
had unhesitatingly rushed to the scene and performed untold acts of selflessness and bravery.
In this time the Members of FDNY, EMS, NYPD, Port Authority PD, the citizens of New York
and the citizens of America were ripped from their lives and thrown into the midst of a battlefield.
Unfortunately for the "faceless cowards" that perpetrated this act, we have risen to the challenge.
An army has descended on downtown Manhattan: FDNY, NYPD, EMS, Iron Workers,
Volunteers, National Guardsmen, doctors, nurses, medical professionals, Firefighters from
surrounding areas, and citizens from all walks of life.
The FDNY is eternally grateful to the Iron Workers (who perhaps should be renamed Men of
Steel) for their ceaseless and tireless work in the rescue effort. You are truly the most capable
souls on God's earth. Thank you, Brothers.
Inexpressible thanks go to the Salvation Army, Red Cross, and the tireless army of volunteers at
the scene day and night. Words can not contain our gratitude for your love and support. Each act
to the least and last is forever in our hearts.
Thanks to each and every Fire Department outside NYC who volunteered personnel, equipment
and endless support. You guys are home runs. We are ever in your debt.
Thank you to businesses who have donated food, clothing, time and money to the rescue effort,
and living/working space to the displaced people and businesses of this tragedy.
Americans across the nation have sacrificed of their time and of themselves for such acts as
waiting in line for hours to donate blood. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Eternal thanks to our Brother and Sister Firefighters in Europe for their united tribute for our fallen.
We wept at your show of solidarity. Thank you!
God Bless You All.
Against all hope Engine 9 sheltered from the collapse of Tower 2, and against all hope Ladder 6
emerged from the rubble after four hours of imprisonment beneath the tons of twisted wreckage.
Against all hope we still pray for the rescue of our Brothers and Sisters and will not stop working
for a moment until they are all found.
Please keep us in your prayers
