Default Crab Floatilla planning

Ok so the event is on 12/15/07, a Saturday in Newport. The low tide is at 0943 (3.9 ft) and the high at 1507 (7.3 ft). This will be a free, pot luck event. Bring whatever you need or have and share what you have alot of. I'm pretty sure no one will go home hungry or thirsty. It's not a competition just a chance to get some time on the water and hang with your buddies. In any case the Rogue is not far away if we catch no crab.

For any of you not familiar with Yaquina bay you will need traps, rings or pots with a moderate amount of weight and 50 foot or longer lines. If the lines are much longer you will need sinking line or a weight and a longline clip for each trap, ring or pot. There are deeper places right off the marine science dock. Check the depth before you splash your gear.

There is an outdoor area to cook and hang out at Big Creek park and it is free to use. I checked with Newport facilities and we cannot reserve it but they thought it unlikely anyone else will be crazy enough to be there when we will. This is just north of town on the east side of 101. Parking is pretty limited for boats and so on so I see maybe a car pool or something like that to get to the cooking area. Or if we are lucky (reasonable weather) we can meet in the parking lot and do it up at South Beach.

You are free to show up whenever and start fishing. I will most likely launch and spend the night on the transient dock. This costs $12 a night with power and water. The tides are soft so there will be minimal problems with lost gear or shallow water.

After high slack I suggest we meet and explore the wonders of a 'Puffin' style crab boil. I'd say 1700 is a good time so everyone has time to pull the boat and clean up. This will go on till everyone leaves.

If you have any ideas or want to talk about what you will bring to the potluck, post it here.

Team 'Kismet' will fish on 'Kismet' and have Woody, Vickie and Pilar aboard. I am bringing crab gear, bait, tools cause I still don't trust my boat, crab spices, cigars and cooking gear. I have extra cooking gear and propane tanks if you need it.

Man, I'd love to come down but the wife and I running the truck, tools and canned food up to Vernonia and help out there.
Good event though, we'll try to meet up next time.
For future reference ... my stepsons comes home for the holidays from the Navy so we're going out either the 22nd or 23rd for crabs, out of Ilwaco just prior to the AM high tide - any Salty Dogs that would like to make the trip with us are invited. Send me a PM and I'll keep you posted on our plans as weather dictates.

Big Creek Park
2510 Ne Big Creek Rd
Newport, OR 97365-1901, US

Best to get a mapquest map up for yourself, but here are the mapquest directions from the intersection of hwy 101 and hwy 20. I know it's obvious I don't know how to put up a map, but the address will get you a "live" map.

1: Start out going NORTH on N COAST HWY / N OREGON COAST HWY / US-101 toward NE 1ST ST. 1.6 miles

2: Turn RIGHT onto NE 32ND ST. <0.1 miles

3: Stay STRAIGHT to go onto NE HARNEY RD. 0.3 miles
4: NE HARNEY RD becomes NE HARNEY DR. 0.1 miles
5: Turn LEFT onto NE BIG CREEK RD. 0.2 miles
6: End at 2510 Ne Big Creek Rd
Newport, OR 97365-1901, US

Total Est. Time: 6 minutes Total Est. Distance: 2.43 miles

Sorry I did not get back sooner. I'm putting the 4x4 back together in the driveway. Last time it did not work and I had a hard time dragging the boater home up the boat ramp.

I'll do this Monday.

Wet sands says we are organizing our sock drawers next weekend. It's a little far out to give this a lot of credit but those guys are right more than they are not. My hope is that the winds will be reasonable and allow bay crabbing if the bar is closed.

On another note we may have found a place to be after the fishing or maybe instead of the fishing. More on this when it is confirmed. I'll put up a list of who's bringing what later today.

Until then.

I know I forgot something so jog my memory or add as you wish.

Looks like 25 to 30 people. One of us is working on a meeting place. I hope to hear from him today. I am pretty sure we can bay crab at least. The forecast is changing but not getting worse. Wet sand and Noaa disagree, there's a surprise. I say we plan to go and bail if the winds are too high. Maybe it will be better and we can get out for bottom fish again.

Here's the list as I see it. We still need about a dozen ears of corn, some red potatoes and a couple of packages of zenners red hots (sausages). If anyone has any sturgeon we could throw that in too.

Drivers (Mentioned boat) All of these guys have gear and cookers. May need crew. We'll let them ask for it.

Bassin ... Boat and gear
JimsBuddy ...Boat and gear
Salty Walty ... Boat and gear
Fyshndad ... Boat and gear

Lastbugle ... Boat and gear
Wetfly ... Boat, Sherry, gear
Pilar ... 'Kismet', crewed by Woody, Vickie, HiTekRdNek, crab gear, bait, cooker, spices
Ron M ... Boat and gear
Eulachon ... Boat and gear
Lundprov ... Boat and gear
Whatugetemon ... Boat and gear

Riders
Woody and Vickie ... 6 pots
Odin ... prefers CR and lives in Vernonia so busy lately
Spindrifter ...
Snug2 ... Moose sausage
Moldy45 ...
Rodaction ... Has 7 pots to lend
Billfisher ...
Puffin ... Crab boil expertise.

Jimsbuddy .. I think you asked about this before and I forgot to answer. Absolutely bring the kids. We'll keep the salty lingo and public drinking to a minimum.

Crabbing is just about the best kid thing going. I can tell you from last weekend it was cold on the water so bring clothing layers and raingear to stay dry and a set of dry clothes so you can get dry if need be.

It is not confirmed yet but we will most likely have a free indoor place to be for after crabbing. Not far from the bay.

For long range planning, I've found these sites to be helpful.

This for winds, pressure, and storm systems moving thru in the next 7.5 days with data shown for every 6 hours.
http://www.stormsurfing.com/cgi/disp...cgi?a=npac_slp

This is my favorite weather site, I check it for local and ocean conditions-this is for NW portion of OR
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecasts/gr...ndweek=ON#tabs

I like wetsands for planning since it also gives the expected period, but it is in 24 hour blocks. This is 6 hour blocks for the next 7.5 days. I know that many of you already use this site.

Wish I could go do this. Remember talking about it in the truck on the way home from Clamming. I got these 10 kids I'm taking to an athletic club near you (no idea which squad I'll have or what club I'm supposed to be at Saturday AM) to do battle with other High School teams. It will just be too late in the day to head for the coast by the time the matches are done and we've cleaned up. I can't pull pots anyway (Doctors orders).

Turns out a Salty brother is having a birthday, so a party we will be having at the lumber yard.

I think we have to cancel the event. The forecast will update at 0900. Gusts to 30 kts will make even the bay rough. There is a chance the forecast is all wet but wetsands agrees.

What do you guys think?

Ive been inside Newport jetty area when waves were so rough that we couldn't see boats on the other jetty fishing.... not fun. Ive also been in Tbay when you had to keep the motor in gear just to keep boat position waiting for doc opening.... Not fun, If its that windy, I say push it off. Bad news Ill be heading out to Cali the following weekend, so it would be a no go until Jan atleast. Pilar, how about changing post to a POLL????

Oh sunday forcast on the weather was dry & windy, if that matters

CRASH nothing oh and its Pilar's favorite Drop Top - you guys are always welcome - course I happen to know who else is having a birthday shortly. Hum, now who could that be

I know it isn't as fun as a boil and eat at the coast, but if its a no go come on over and say howdy! Mrs Sea was thinking of a large batch of dirty rice with lamb burger, maybe toss a leg roast on the smoker - a cajun vegie boil would be excellent. Just let me know who's coming.
