Default Stonewall Adrift but Reporting

Stonewall Buoy broke loose of it mooring this morning but is still is reporting:

Current position 45º 00' 25" N 124º 16' 05" W

23ft @ 17sec w/ 7ft windwave - South wind 47kts w/ gust to 56kts

Bit sporty today. Given the wind and wave direction the buoy should end up on land somewhere between Pac-City and Bayview.

When you say CR Buoy ... is that the weather bouy that's out 20 plus miles or the actual "Columbia River Buoy" marking the entrance, aka "Sparkplug" ???
Can you imagine having one of these buoy's come through the water at you ?

Not like the spark plug or CR bouy at all. If you see this on the beach call NOAA.

They both 46029 and 46050 are similar to picture above. Also if you have seen them on Radar they have some kind of 'active' radar signature. They look much bigger on the scope than they really are.

Not sure how they are anchored.

According to mapsource this puts the buoy 38 miles northwest of it's original moored position. Wow, that's an expensive drifter ...

Not good news, but understandable. Conditions were fairly extreme out there the last few days. Usually it's into spring before the buoy's will be put back because of the difficulty of placing them in bad weather-- which we have lots of till early spring. I hope they can replace them sooner this time since at least two fairly important ones are adrift.

here is the link for 46050, the stonewall buoy, it has a link to the current position of the buoy

and here is the link to the current position

Columbia river bouy

Station 46029 went adrift on 12/03/2007 and the last report from its moored position was at 0700Z. It is still transmitting valid observation data, which continue to be reported here, but not from the location above. Click here to see the latest positions.

Location as of 12/03/07 2234z is 46* 45' 07" N 124* 18' 36" W

I find it amazing that they both went adrift at the same time according to the reports. That being 0700 Zulu. If you notice the waves at 0700 Zulu were at their peak of 42 to 44 foot. That's some darn big waves folks.

Imagine a wall of water that high. Scary.

The damage from this storm both in terms of wind, storm surge, rain and flooding is going to be huge.

5.5 inches of rain at my house since midnight. Rivers are already over their banks here in Snohomish and are forecasted to peak at 8 to 12 feet above flood stage.

It's not called the Columbia River Buoy anymore. According to those numbers it's just off the entrance of Wilipa Bay.

Channel 8 is reporting an explosion risk for these two due to sea water possibly penetrating their batteries (hydrogen gas explosion risk). They are warning folks to stay away if they come ashore. :frown:

Notice in the design their are angles strategically placed, these are "reflectors" that in effect amplify the radar return echo. Next time you make your way to PDX out on the airfield their are 5 orange poles that have a small radar reflector on them that accomplish the same thing however is used for the AGC circuits of the ASDE radar system.

Here's a shot of the 50 buoy I took last year. Note the bars around the base to keep the seals off it.

Uh......some folks might want to look at the chart, and see for a fact what the buoy has.

The weather buoys (like 46050) do NOT have an active radar return system; only passive. But good reflectors. Look at the chart:

ODAS 46050 Fl (4) Y 20 S

So it flashes 4 times every 20 seconds. The CR weather buoy 46029 is the same.

But the CR approach buoy (lighted whistle buoy) does have RACON, which amplifies & returns the pulse of the radar, which gives an image that shows up on the screen.

Look at the chart:

RW "CR" Mo (A) Whis Racon

which means red & white, morse code A (it flashes short, long), has a whistle, and Racon.

You find Racon on significant navigational buoys, usually at the center / turning point of a precautionary area. Like the CR, SF, Cape Mendocino..... but not on a weather buoy.

Oh BTW, one can always look up these things (which buoy is where) on the coast pilot

Thanks for the tip on the buoys Mark. When I get my new charts I'll check that out.

The 2 KW raymarine radar I use has no trouble seeing either of those weather bouys.

No need to wait; you can look at maptech:
